I was told that the shifter on my truck can be removed by pushing in and turning it is this true? It is a four speed, I was told the the reason that it is stuck in first gear is because it is actually in two gears at once and the shifting forks are worn and they have jammed each other together? Does this sound right to anyone? Thanks

not sure about the trans being stuck in two gears at once (not sure how they work inside) but as far as removing the shifter goes if the trans is like mine the tin dome shaped piece at the base of the shifter is what you have to turn. if i recall correctly you just push down and turn it counter clockwise at the same time. i used a pair of channel lock pliers to go this. but you have to be carfull not to mar the surface. hope that helps a little

The sheet metal cover at the top of the shift tower is spring-loaded, and can be removed by pushing it down about 1/4" and turning it counterclockwise a little. The shift handle will pop up and it can be lifted out of the tower. Once it's out, you might also have to unbolt the top of the transmission to inspect the shift linkage, but getting the shifter out is the first step.

what can happen if its worn and what happens if its stuck in two gears at once, meaning the transmission wont turn period.
Usually the gear shift lever will feel a little more wiggly.
what happens is the ball on the end of the shift lever can jump out of the rails... then what happens is when you try to shift a gear it will push one of the forks into a gear.... you keep moving the shifter around and try to take it out of gear and it can move a different rail into another gear, hence two gears at the same time meaning the transmission wont turn...ive seen it happen several times on one that the tower or rails or forks and shifter are worn pretty good. we used to build up the shifter by welding it..or brazing it would last awhile again....

After you get the lever out block the wheels & put the clutch in to release any pressure on the gears. Take a large screwdriver & stick it down in the hole & move the levers till all the holes line up. Then put the shifter back in with the end in the gap in the levers. It should work then.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
