I bought a quart of Champagne color AD interior paint from Classic Parts of America.

But it came with NO instructions, and they stuck a sticker over the label so I can't tell what kind of paint I've got!

Can anybody who's sprayed this advise me? (I'm using HVLP)

All I can read on the can is: Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000. When I search the web for this, I get a zillion hits for every possible product in that product line. Does anybody know exactly what kind of paint Classic Parts sells, so I can dig up the correct data sheets?

Thanks! chico

This is probably what they use as the base. Then they would tint it to whatever color they sell, which in your case would be Champagne.

Dave - Thanks, that PDF looks like what I need.

But I'm totally confused by the mixing instructions on the PDF. Do I have to go out and purchase additional stuff (RHF65, 75, 85, or 95), or do you think it's already mixed and ready to apply? Also, I usually have to thin significantly for my HVLP setup to spray smoothly. Do you have any experience with this base, enough to suggest what I'd thin with?

When the weekend's over, I'll Classic Parts and see if they can give me some help. You'd think it'd cost them less to include some basic instructions rather than have to spend time with confused customers on the phone. Oh well...

Thanks again....

Chico,

The Ultra 7000 line is a paint system. There are primers, base coats and clear coats in the system. All of them use their own set of additives to make them spray easier, flow and lay down depending on the conditions they are sprayed in. The RHF65, 75, etc. are stabilizers that you add to regulate flash time depending on what temperature you are spraying at. The BCS line of stabilizers have characteristics that also help when using metal flake, etc.

They do serve as a thinner to a point, but you may need to thin the paint more to make it perform with your equipment. The hardener is usually only used in the clear coat.

Check out this link, these "how to" may help. http://www.sherwin-automotive.com/reference/bdp-ultra.cfm

Thanks, Dave. But when you say I may need to thin the paint more, how would I do that? With what? I don't see anything in the datasheets about how I'd thin paint to where I'd want it...

You might try peeling the label off. I bought a quart from one of the vendors, and was in the same boat as you are. I got to fooling around and noticed a seam on said label. I split the seam, and low and behold underneath was a ppg alk 200 label. It had flash times ect on the info sheet under the label. I went to the local ppg dealer and got the MSDS sheet and more info on that product line. I also had them match the paint, and got another quart for about 1/3 of what I paid for it online. Hope this helps.

Chico,

Here is a link to the MSDS for Ultra 7000. For most paints, this can be used as a guide to what is compatible to be used as a thinner by what is listed as already being in it.

http://www.sherwin-automotive.com/media/msds/English/1011.pdf

For example, the first ingredient in the mix is Mineral Spirits. Although it only makes up a small percentage of the base, it is a safe bet you can use it to thin this type of paint and make it spray better.

Another indication is what the supplier recommends to use for cleanup.

So keeping that in mind and going back to the MSDS, it shows Mineral Spirits as an ingredient in the base coat but not in the clear coat Ultra 7000. So you wouldn't use Mineral Spirits to thin it. In fact, using Mineral Spirits in the clear coat may really mess it up.

Conversely, using Methyl Ethyl Keytone in the base to thin it may give bad results. Using it as a thiner in the clear would be ok.

Chico, I can't help with the topic but was wondering if anyone had any information on getting the correct champagne color from PPG. The Sherwin-WIlliams proscees seems complicated to me especially after viewing the PDF links as you pointed out.

Thanks

Still trying to get ole Betsy back on the road.
