Picked up 1961 235 today. The engine is complete. Previous owner removed from 61 Car to put in V8. Pulled plugs, put oil in cylinders and turned engine by hand for about a dozen revolutions, put 12 volts to starter and 12 volt coil with resistor, gas to carb. Fired on first turn. Idled good, restarted several times. No pipe on exhaust manifold but could not hear any strange noise. Tomorrow I want to check oil pressure. There was no oil filter on the engine so where do I hook up the oil pressure line??? There are two plugs on the drivers side. One is at the rear of the block, the other is about midway just above the pan rail.

Also I notice what looks like a plug on the passenger side just ahead of the two bolts that holds the coil, is this an external oil passage to tap onto for an oil pressure gauge?

The ports on the left side are for your filter and the guage. The port forward of the carb/exhaust pipe is the outlet and the one aft of them is the return. On my '59 there is a tee at the aft port where the guage tube ties in. The one on the right side of the head is plugged. I don't know what it might have been for.

Ps. That return port is just aft of the exhaust pipe. The port at the very aft end is plugged on mine.

Here are where the oil lines go on a 1954 235 block. My 1960 261 block is the same (except the 1960 has a full-pressure filtration system and larger holes/lines, while the '54 has a by-pass filtration system). My oil filter is a GM AC canister clamped to the intake manifold. The inlet (right upper side of canister) and outlet (bottom of the canister) openings are labelled on the canister. The above information came from an illustrated GM installation guide (for 1953).

As Cletis indicates, the oil pressure guage line goes into a tee adapter that goes into the block in the hole on the right.

I do not know what the purpose is of plugged hole in the middle top of the head on the coil side. This hole goes into an oil system journal that leads to the rocker arm shaft.

On my 235, there is a line that goes from the outlet on the drivers side to the "plug on the passenger side just ahead of the two bolts that holds the coil " that L. Day references. Previous discussion here suggests its a bypass to get oil to the head if normal channels are blocked. Its interesting that this stock engine is predrilled for this line...
