I took my Ugly Truck into the muffler shop today to have the annual safety inspection done (I've been takin cars and trucks to this guy for years.) While it was there I asked him to replace the half-fast job I'd done with muffler clamps and a couple of 60 degree turndowns on the Cherry Bombs and weld everything up.

I asked him to run the tailpipes (plural...I've got split headers and 2 Cherry Bombs) so that they'd exit in front of the rear wheel (singular....I wanted both pipes to exit in front of the left rear wheel.) You can probably see this coming.

So the guy did a great job of fabbing up a custom exhaust for me...except that he has the output of one muffler going to the left side...and the other one over to the right side.

With the split headers, it sounds kinda funny from the driver's compartment. First of all, it's disgustingly quiet. I can even hear the exhaust manifold leak now. frown And it doesn't shoot nearly as much flame out the pipes as it used to. It's almost (gasp) respectable. I spose I could even put a CD in the player and listen to it if I wanted to.

I guess I'm gonna have to crawl under it and see if he put an H-pipe in...and if he didn't, I think I'll take it back and ask him to do it. At least that otta equalize the sound from side to side....or help a little bit.

And I spose I otta replace the manifold gasket on the 292. That cheapie paper thing that came with the headers doesn't seem to have lasted very long.

Anybody know if they make dead-soft gaskets for 230/250/292 motors? I haven't seen any, but that doesn't mean a lot.

Feelin a little too legal now (but I still got my blue dots and brodie knob...and those even passed the safety inspection),

I used to work on fleets of commercial trucks & had lots of trouble with manifold gaskets on 292s. The best ones had stamped stainless steel on the exhaust & fiber onthe intake but you can,t get them anymore. The ones the gasket co,s put out now work good on 1/2 tons but burn out in about a year on the 1 ton up. Put some copper type gasket sealer on both sides & retorque after warmup. smile

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
