Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 30 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 30 | I know some of the vendors sell in ,mix and spray form, one color for steering column and one for dash and the rest of interior sheetmetal. I know some opinions about dash paint in rattle can ,such as Rustoleum 7272. Does anybody know of a close match in rattle can for the steering column, wheel and any other contrasting pieces in 47-53 AD cabs?

Anyone? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | I've heard it descrbed as being a darker shade of the interior color. Unless someone comes up with a paint code or matching off-the-shelf color my plan is to just get a can of black and throw a little in the interior color.
If you do that, be very careful as black will darken colors VERY easily. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | I haven't got the time right now to research this. I’m sure there was some discussion on this just a few months ago but I can’t get to my notes now. But, the wheel mast jacket and shifter rod is non-metallic as opposed to the metallic interior paint. Also the tint is not the same as the interior. The best way that I can describe it is somewhere between salmon and mauve. I’ll bet that really helps now doesn’t it!!! I tried photographing it with several different light sources but it just comes out gray, which is incorrect because it has a reddish, brown tint to it. I have a mast jacket that has excellent paint on it but it’s in the truck right now so I can’t take it into the store with me. Besides, my dealer has never had much luck scanning any samples that I have brought into him. We always end up looking through the hundreds of paint books. I’d like to get this one settled also so I can rush down to the PPG store and blow another hundred bucks on paint!! Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

Pearl Beige was the standard color for a pickup cab in 1954.
However, some color documents (drawings, not photographs) that I have of a 47-53 truck interior, show the steering wheel and the steering column painted the same color as the rest of the interior sheet metal. It should be noted that sometimes the artists that made the color drawings took liberty in depicting all the details correctly. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 493 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 493 | I hope someone gives the magic answer. Was the column the same as the wheel. My steering wheel is gold. Let me rephrase that. My steering wheel has some gold still hanging on to it in places. However, someone had painted the dash silver. Was the speaker grill all one color on a 52 or was there a second color?
thanks Neil | | | | | | OLTrucks Unregistered | | OLTrucks Unregistered | The steering wheel, column and three speed shift handle are the same color but not the same as the dash and not gold. In 1952-53 speaker grills along with the glovebox door were only one color from the samples I have seen in the wild. Jim Carter has an article here | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 493 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 493 | Thanks OLTrucks that article helped. I am not that happy to see that the 52 dash was not as pretty as the earlier years.
Thanks Neil | | | | | | OLTrucks Unregistered | | OLTrucks Unregistered | Well if it helps I like to see them the right color. My Dec.1951 dash is also only one color. Oh and one note on the pictures in that article the bottom one is of a suburban thats the reason for the odd color.

The recessed bars in the radio and glove box grill were a slightly different shade than the over all interior. I don't think this is documented anywhere but it was that way on mine and it was original not repainted and I have seen it on many others. It only makes sense esthetically to break the grill up with a different shade just as they do with the radiator grill. I hope that is your truck we are looking at Mike, I’m assuming that it is since it’s in you album. If not I would sure like to talk to the owner about where the interior paints came from.
Ahh, the first picture just opened, YES, YES, your camera skills are to be applauded!!! That’s it, the same shade I was attempting to describe. Must be the sunlight that gives you the right color, all of my light was artificial and it just shows up gray. So are you saying that the paint for the steering components in this picture came from Jimmy Carter, how about the interior color? I bought a qt. of his interior paint and it was flat as a chalkboard, had no metallic in it and the shade was WAY off, so I’m kind of gun shy toward JC’s paint. I’m wondering now if I just didn’t get a bad batch? But that’s why I’m so absolutely convinced that the PPG paint offsets are the only way to go with the interior of an AD. Now the engine picture, very nice, what did you/they use on the carburetor? Thanks for the pic, that really helped me.

For my truck I am using the PPG 27467 paint for the interior and the Jim Carter paint for the steering wheel, mast and shift lever. As they are painted I will post pictures - probably a month away.
The radio grill on my 1953 is all one color, it is not two different shades as Denny describes. My 1953 did not use the stainless/chrome upper and lower bars on the radio grill, rather it was all painted, along with a painted glove box door. The pull handle on the ash tray is maroon plastic not chrome. The letters for CHEVROLET on the top bar are painted white/off white - I am not sure which, I suspect white that yellowed with time. So even though I like the look of the bright work I will be doing my radio grill and glovebox door painted the interior color as original.
I picked up a second 53 radio grill from a radio delete truck and there was a black fiberboard behind the grill, my truck will have a radio, so I am going to use the fiberboard as a template to cut some screen material which I will spray black to use in the speaker grill.

Here is a picture of the original glovebox door that was in my 1950. I replaced it because it was caved in. I got the colors bass ackwards, the interior color is in the grooves and the lighter tint is on the raised sections. Much of it is worn off but you can still see some of it. The door is the PPG 27467 and it looks a little dark because of the lights inside the garage. In the sunlight it is much lighter. I know Classic parts also advertises the "correct darker shade" for the steering wheel and column but when you really ave nothing to compare it is hard to say if it really is correct or not.
When it comes down to it though, I'm not looking to take a national championship with this truck or anything, I am restoring family history as much as anything and leaving some of the changes in that my family made to make this theirs. God knows grandpa didn't buy it to show it off, or I wouldn't have this much work to do. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 204 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 204 | Horn Button - Wondering how to approach masking the lettering and the the bars on the horn button. Let me know any thoughts.
Denny - when my painter shoots the Jim Carter I will have him shoot a small plaque and send it to you for you library.

It will be interesting to see if it matches the colors on my mast jacket, which is in real nice shape still. I'll photograph them next to each other for a comparison. PM me when your ready and I'll shoot ya my address. Thanks again, Denny Graham Sandwich, IL
