| | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 63 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 63 | hey all, I just looked through the tech tips section on engine identifing and am still lost, my head casting # is 3836848 then B55 848 I tried looking for the 261 "Captain marks" in front of the starter and all I can see is on the block about 4in. ahead of the starter are the raised letters "GM" so if anyone can help me that be great! -Thanks!

My 261 also has captain's bars under the exhaust manifold on the block. If your engine has 1/2" NPT oil filter threads on the driver's side of the block, that is a dead giveaway that it is a 261.
I've never seen a 261 that didn't have captain's bars. There may have been a couple of 235's that had captain's bars, but I've never seen one that had them.

Thanks for the great Tech Tip article on the 261. I've never seen a 261 and I was always curious what "Captain's Bars" looked like.
But be careful when comparing the casting numbers because one of the head numbers, listed as 3769925, is actually a block casting number, as shown in one of the pics.

Good eyes. I'll have to check my 1960 261 to see what head casting number is on it.
The "Captain's Bars" are shown clearly at Jim Carter's Tech Tip link above.

They also apppear on the drivers (manifold side). I'll try to find a pic. Here's Geezer's 261, notice captain's bars, as above vertical, raised, parrallel, superior to and center of new brass plugs. Of course this is the manifold side. Notice too the half inch oil ports.
