I might buy a 61 Chevy truck. but I'm curious about the engine, so I asked the guy for the numbers. he could only find intake: 3754644, and head: B21 846 850. I'm not 100% sure he got all the numbers right. I'm guessing it'd be a 261 Chevy engine, but any input on this would be highly appreciated. thanks!

seetz, what size truck is it?

I think the block casting number is near the upper right of the starter. It would be 7 digits in 1961.

The number pressed into the block, just to the rear of the distributor is the engine ID (engine serial number).

Either number/code is useful in identifying an engine.

thanks for the first replies, but however, I need to make things work with just these numbers. I'd love to have a block number, because at stovebolt, inliners, and some more great places, all the engine numbers can be found. but the guy that's selling is 200 miles away and somehow he's only able to give me these numbers. It seems to be a 3/4 ton truck. it's long wheel base, and has an auto tranny (that is, I can't see a clutch pedal, and it's got one of those shifter handles on the steering column. I don't know auto transmission really well, the only auto I drive is in our Dodge minivan). it's got 8 lug wheels. and I'm sorry I'm asking a question like this, I know it's hard this way, but it's all I got and I don't know much about 60-66's. sorry! thanks!

The 1965 Superior Interchange manual for light trucks says
intake manifold 3754644 is for

Chev Truck '59-63 6-235 except fwd control.

Hope this helps.

randy thanks! looking at 235's I was able to confirm the info you gave me and try to cross-match it against that intake, but no way! that means to me either that this engine has been messed around with, because the head number that the guy gave me does not match the intake, or that he can't read and got the numbers wrong. so it helps for sure, thanks again
