Your 49 didn't come with a fuse box, just inline fuses. Do a search on here for what others have done. Are you installing a new wiring harness, if so it should come with one.

Your 49 did not come with a fuse box. I've seen some univesal fuse blocks at Advance Auto and O'Reilly that would work well. They have one with Barrel Fuses that looks cool and would probably go with the nostalgia of the truck. You can also use a spade type fuse block and hide it.

Do all new harnesses come with fuse boxes?

None of my reproduction harnesses came with a 2-circuit fuse "box" (even for 1954, in which a fuse box is original equipment).

mgebo52,

What brand/vendor wiring harness did you use? If it was a reproduction harness, it would not come with a fuse box. If you are restoring to original "specs", as stated above, there was no fuse box in 1949 but you could add a fuse box. [This not correct: there was a standard 48-49 5-circuit fuse box - see below.]

Tim - I think all the harnesses sold as "xx circuits" come with a fuse box, ones sold as year "reproductions" won't because the fuse box wasn't originally part of the wiring .... I don't believe the fuse panel was actually "standard" when they first started using them, only added if the truck was getting optional [electrical] equipment .... that's the way it's been on every TF series truck I've seen, if they were the "base" model, no fuse panel, if elec wipers, or radio or etc, they had the fuse panel

Bill,

I know nothing about Task Force trucks, but I am surprised to hear there was no fuse box/block/panel/etc on standard production TF trucks.

I thought mgbo52 was talking about a 49 pickup.

A fuse "box" (two fuses and storage for 1 or 2 spare fuses) was standard on the firewall of all 1954 trucks but I do not know in what year that "box" became standard. I am fairly certain there was no standard fuse "box" in 1949, as stated by others above (I'll check this out, when I get home tonight). [There was a standard 48-49 5-circuit fuse box - see below.]

As I stated above, "None of my reproduction harnesses came with a fuse "box" (even for 1954, in which a fuse box is original equipment).

Tim - yes, I'm a little off topic grin
what are those 2 fuses for?
on the TF trucks, the lights are fused on/in the light switch, and there's nothing else that needs a fuse

this original TF fuse panel has 3 of the 7 slots used, and the truck [Steve Taylors 700 mile original '59] is equipped with radio, lighter and deluxe heater, any of which would have 'triggered' installing the panel [others are spotlamp, backup lamp, brakelamp(signals), wipers], beyond that it's just a junction block

I suppose it was a matter of saving a few cents for GM

The 2 fuses on '50 - '54 trucks were for the wiring going "out back". One for stop lights, and one for tail lights.

The Shop Manual for '48 - '51 trucks does indeed show a 5 slot fuse panel and cover for the '48 - '49 models. These were for:
1. High beam
2. Low beam
3. Park
4. Tail lights
5. Stop lights

5-slot fuse panel for 48-49? Where was it mounted? Near the voltage regulator on the firewall (where the 2-fuse box is mounted in '54)?

Here's what the manual says:
(info in the lower left corner of this page)

http://chevy.tocmp.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm1201.htm

So, looks to me like it should be about in the same place as the 2-fuse set-up on the later AD's.

You are right, Waldo. I'll post a photo of the 48-49 5-circuit fuse box tomorrow, if no one else posts one by then.

so I guess the change from 5 to 2 was when they started using a different light switch with built in protection? then in 55 they must have decided the rear light fuses weren't necessary .... on the TF switch there's seperate bimetal links for tail/stop and head/park lights

As waldo53 described (thanks for the correction):

1948-1949 Advance-Design fuse box.

Isn't there a fuse under the dash on the '54 too or is my truck just weird?

JD - what you have is probably an inline fuse, commonly added with aftermarket equipment, like to power your non-stock radio

Hmmm. That's a thought. The fuse is right below the guage cluster. It has a switch on it but I don't know what it's for.

That would most likely be the heater motor/blower control switch.

Then what is the cable connected to the heater for? It goes to the knob right next to the fuse.

If you are referring to the black knob with a white indentation on the front of it, that is attached to a cable that opens the interior air door on the front of the Air Flow heater (if you have a that style of 54 heater). See if there is a word on the switch "lever" on the fused switch.

Guess what it says... It says the same thing my radio says........ ATR! Now why would ATR be on the heater switch?

Post an ad in the Swap Meet - I think you'll only find a used one.
