I tried to get an extra key made for my '53 6400 today and the hardware store didn't have a blank to match. I got to looking at the key and realized that it still has the knock out in place with a 4 digit number on it. Does that number designate the cut of the key or just the key blank?
Thanks Don | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 23 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 23 | I just ordered two blanks from Jim Carter for the 57 and got the local hardware to cut them for me. I got to lookin at my old key and its one of originals with the knockout still in it I thought about taking it to the local Chevy dealer just to see if they still could still cut it but I did'nt make it by there and yes the number on the knockout is the cut of the key | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 388 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 388 | the no# on the knock out is suppose to let the locksmith know how to cut the key to fit the door or ign. I think all the old 50s key blanks are the same, but don't bet on it (TRUE VALUE) stores always had the blanks for me and they still cut them the old fashion way. I'm sure older hardware stores should have them also. If you need a blank (orginal)for your truck and cant find one pm me and Ill send you some. good luck, Mike | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 19 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 19 | I had some made for a 48 I had several years ago. Go to a Chevy dealer that's been in business for 50 years and they will have a key machine that they put the blank in, set the numbers, and squeeze the handle and it will cut the key. They told me that they used the same blank from 1935 to 1967. | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 595 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 595 | i thought those blanks were curtis #10's. local locksmith will be able to make one call around before for pricing. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 | At the local swap meet, there is usually a locksmith there, with blanks for the old vehicles. | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,440 Extreme Gabster | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,440 | The blanks are B-10. That is the hex head blank trucks use for all locks. The round head blank that was used for the car trunks is B-11. And yes, with the code number and a code book, a new key can be cut with a Curtis key cutter. This is one of my hobbies. | | |
