I'm new to the area and am looking for a commercial sandblaster in Houston to clean up my frame. Any 'Bolters know of someone that can do this? I would do it myself, but I don't think the neighbors in my sub-division would appreciate it....
thanx,
wirewheelz

Wire - Call Houston Metal Stripping at 281 367 4037. I do not know if they sandblast but they do have acid tanks and do media blasting. There are some other places that may be able to help you out. To find them do a yahoo search for "Sandblast*, Houston" and make some calls. The last time I investigated this I found a couple of places on the east side of town that would work with me. Also search for "Metal Stripping, Houston" as it might turn up other options.

To blast my trailer I rented a 175CFM compressor for $75/day and used a friend's pressure pot. It made a hell of a mess but I was able to clean it up before the neighbors got too [censored].

If you do it yourself be sure to use safety gear. I would offer my assistance but I have been there and done that already. grin

If the frame is not too bad you can use a knotted wire wheel on a grinder to get most of the problem areas and then use a small siphon blasting set up (Wal-Mart has them) for the areas you could not get to.

Another option is to look in the Houston Chronicle, section 114 as I have seen an ad there in the past offering stripping services for paint and rust. The other type of stripping services are listed in section 649.

Another heads up to you - there is a large swap meet this Sunday at the Horse Track on Sam Houston Tollway North. Send me a PM if you decide to go. There typically are vendors there who offer similar services. I will be there early.

Houston54,
thanks, I'll give Houston Metal Stripping a call. I'm planning on going to the swap meet on Sunday, not sure what time though as I haven't checked the kids soccer schedule, etc. I'm up in Spring, where you at?

Don't wait too long or all the treasures are in someone elses garage.

I am in the Spring area also. Look for a private message from me with my contact information.

Just my 2 cents: Blasting the frame is a good idea and saves much back and skin. However if I had it to do over I would not have the sheetmetal blasted. While all the old paint and visible rust was removed, there were places you could not see where "old man rust" was hiding. When I replaced corners I discovered areas that a blaster could never reach leaving plenty of rust. If I ever do it again I will, for certain, have it acid dipped. I've heard of problems of dippers not rinsing the acid off good enough, but I still believe for me that is the best route to take.

Big Chevy,
I hear 'ya. I've seen a careless sandblaster ruin sheet metal - it heats up and warps, so my plan is to blast the frame only. For sheet metal I've always had the best luck w/a DA sander.

Right wire, but even a good sandblaster that won't overheat will not be able to knock out the rust in unreachable places. And neither will anyone using a DA or any other approach. There are areas within your cab that are enclosed and boxed in where you would have to drill out spot-welds to get to them. Those will always have rust. That's why I say next time it's the "Big Dipper" for me. Hey, that's a great name for a acid dip company, "The Big Dipper Inc.".
Motto "Get dipped at The Big Dipper". grin
