I just bought a 54 Chev Pickup and discovered that it would not shift except between 2nd and 3rd. I thought the linkage was not adjusted properly. After taking the linkages loose, the transmisssion shifts into gears "at the transmission" with the upper linkages disconnected. The shift box was taken apart and it appears to be working properly. However, with the shift lever properly attached to the steering column, the shaft will not lift far enough to engage forward and reverse in the shift box no matter how it is adjusted. So my question is.... Could someone have installed a shift lever assembly from a Pre 54 truck that will not work on a 54???

The linkage rods (and shifter column) are different in 54 in comparison to earlier years.

I think you are saying that a pre 54 Column Shift lever and rod going from the steering wheel to the firewall will not work on a 54.
If so then I probably need to post on parts wanted Forum for the 1954 shift lever and rod.

Yes, the 54 shift lever and rods attached to the steering column are different from earlier years.

And, the the linkage rods from the shifter box on the engine side of the steering column to the transmission (four rods) are also different in 1954, in comparison to earlier years.
