I would like to replace the oil bath breather for a single barrel carb on my 65 GMC. I tried the open paper type from "auto shack" and the engine would not stay running...too much air and I did not want to make any novice "let's play with air/fuel and see what it does" mistakes.
Any help for this inline sixes novice?

Too much air? The engine should stay running even without a filter, so I'd say too little air was the problem you had. The filter might've been too restrictive for the engine, so try a bigger filter.

...either that or the old filter WAS restrictive, and the carb was intentionally detuned to somehow keep it running with that restriction. This would also mean you weren't getting the best performance before, and the tuning of the carb will get you much better gas mileage.

I had not thought of the "detune" carb settings. The motor was gone through about 500 miles ago by the previous owner (now deceased). As for the "too much air" I put my hand over 4/5ths of the paper cleaner and the idle smoothed out. Thanks for the suggestion...I will look into that.

Had the same issue with my C10. The oil bath air cleaner is probably clogged up, and it was very unhappy until I re-installed the little chrome air cleaner the PO had on there when I bought it.

I had to futz with fuel/air, idle & timing to get it running well again. I'd still like to use the oil bath setup, but it obviously needs a good cleaning smile .

It sounds like the motor has a vacumn leak,if the motor has been apart check the intake gaskets for a leak. PO might have messed up the gasket or left off a vacumn line
