I found TDC with no problem, and the engine fired right up. But, I couldn't get it to idle at all. I adjusted the idle screw, but still no idle. But I did notice white smoke coming out of the carb when the engine was off. Is this what I think it is? Head Gasket failure?     I didn't notice any sign of water in the oil. hmm...... Steve

Burning antifreeze produces white smoke out the exhaust. If you mean it won't stay running at lower speed, I would guess that you might have a vacuum leak. This is quite possible after disturbing the distributor. You could have a cracked vacuum line.

I would look at the linkage. If the linkage is stuck and you play with the idle screw, it will have little effect. Also, when you turn it off the extra gas can cause a white cloud to come from the carb. hr41pearl
