It comes in a spray can with a good tip. anyways it is almost a spot on match to the factory color, if you have the bronzish color interior. Just thought id share the info! | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | I will definitely be looking into this. I have good samples from an original dash as well as GM Approved repro speaker grille painted the (supposed) correct color.
PPG 27467 Graphite Brown Metallic is a good code if you want some mixed.
Someone will be by shortly to disagree, I'm sure... it's one of THE most hotly contested issues around here. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 493 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 493 | Rust-Oleum 7272 Dark Bronze Metallic is also very close. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 34 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 34 | It looks pretty good to me, but im not after the EXACT perfect match. Im definately going to do the entire inside of my cab with this stuff. Let me know how you like it czeckman. Best part is its only about 6 bucks a can! | | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 435 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 435 | $6 bux a can? You'll be money ahead going to the paint store and buying a quart of whatever color you want and repainting it that way. Been there, done that. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Yes Neil, close, but no cigar. The 7272 Rustolium is to Gray and lacking in the gold or brown tint that the original paint had and that gives it that “Champagne” color that is described so often. Sergent, I'm always willing to try the paints that are readily available on the retail market. The Duplicolor T415 I have been looking for since you posted the thread. Taint available at any of the stores in a 40-mile radius of me so far. But I will add it to the shelf FULL of others when I find it, just to say that I’ve tried it. So far, after hearing, trying, comparing a couple dozen paint samples from hardware stores, auto stores, antique parts vendors I still find that there is only one paint that matches the original interior of an Advance Design Chevy truck. And that is, one more time, PPG DBU/DBI #27467, which is the offset formula for the original, Ditzler #31104 paint supplied directly from the “PPG color library archives.” Denny Graham Sandwich, IL Oh yes, can’t forget Bill Hirsch. The Gray engine paint that is sold by Bill Hirsch is incorrect according to the archivist at the VCCA. It is to light so you might as well just use Rustolium V7786 Smoke Gray at half the price. I have tried it and comparing it to the original paint fragments that were on my 1950, 216 engine block I would have to agree with them. The 216 Gray that is sold by The Filling Station does match the original color, which was quite dark.

I had to drive 119 miles today to find an auto parts store that had Duplicolor T415. I laid down a sample next to the PPG 27467 and it is close but it has to much gold tint in it. It comes out quite a bit lighter than the offset color from PPG. Once again, if you’re not after the absolute original color I doubt if 95% of the people who see it will be able to tell the difference. The only way anybody is going to tell that it's off is to have a color chip in his or her back pocket for comparison. Either the T415 or the Rustolium is reasonably close, just not perfect. So that's another can of spray paint to add to the collection on the shelf. Of course you understand that it would be a fruitless effort to try to take pictures to show you. There are just too many variables between the lighting, cameras, computer screens, graphic programs, color systems etc., to display an accurate rendition of the colors. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

It is too light Denny, what is your opinion of the gray on THIS ENGINE? Follow the link in the first post. We know how deceiving colors can be on these photos but the gray on this engine looks a LOT(!) lighter than the Bill Hirsch color which is being claimed to be too light. Your comments please. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Woody, THIS ENGINE? Are you referring to the color of one of those engines (there are 8 photos of maybe six different engines??). The blue-colored engines are painted the blue that is more commonly associated with 54-62 passenger car engines (Blue Flame Six). They are all 54 or later engines (and number 8 has an interesting valve-cover decal). Here is a 1954 truck engine painted Jim Carter gray (the oil filter is a 55-62 AC canister painted 55-62 colors). Are photos 1-2 and 7 the pre-54 engines painted gray that you are referring to? Let's wait to hear from Denny on the pre-54 gray. No offense to the VCCA or AACA arhivist/experts, but I doubt that anyone can be 100% sure that "their shade of gray, or dark-gray, or or blue-gray" for every/any/all 29-62 Chevrolet truck 6-cylinder is THE correct shade of gray. Well here are a few color chips and comparisons for those that are seeking the truth, or just don’t have any thing else to do on this fine Sunday afternoon! The first ones are of the interior paints that we have been discussing. And the second link is of the engine gray that snuck in to the thread. I’m assuming this was the pictures that you were referring to Woody?? Interior comparison, thre different angles: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2381077150098611668BeNpNC Engine gray comparison Krylon, Omni-Pak, EN-16 25116 Gray to the Melborne Thriftmaster: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2267787010098611668LGUmHw Tim I need to look at your link to see how it compares to the others but I just can't get it all in this morning. Yea, the engine gray... that's why I quoted your reference to the engine gray, the engine gray that you snuck into the discussion... you know, the engine gray I quoted you referring to in your post. I just found it interesting (not trying to be argumentative) that a car entered in a contest for historically accurate cars would have a color much lighter than the Hirsch Engine Gray that VCCA claims is actually lighter than the "correct" color. Personally, I could give a fig... I'm painting mine the Hirsch Engine Gray. If it were any darker it would be black so there's either been a significant reformulation of their color or these photos are very light. If there's any left over after my rebuild, I'll spay some and send you a sample. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Now Woody, how can you with your background in graphics, possibly call that engine in the upper half of the picture black??? Black is what those round things are that are decorating the dark gray thing! And that’s taken in a closed up garage with no windows, you ought’a see it in the sunlight. From my post: I'm painting mine the Hirsch Engine Gray. If it were any darker it would be black
Both engines pictured appear much lighter than the Hirsch Gray I have. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Hey Woody, are ya sure ya shook the can before ya sprayed it???

Again, make up your own mind, after all is said and done, it’s your truck guys. And now I gotta get some real work done, bye ya’ll! Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

Now you tell me | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Ya know, this engine color subject has just about played itself out in my book. But one last thing that I went through last year was the same as you are encountering Woody. When I first sprayed the tin with the Krylon I complained of it being WAY to dark, almost charcoal gray. As you can see from the pics in reality it doesn't look that dark when you get it out in the sunlight. And one more time, this really does reflect the original shade of the chips that I later found on the block. So now, I be done with this for good!!!!
What do ya think of the interior color compairisons? You got the eagle eye Woody when it comes to colors, but to my eye the closest and also the cheapest is the Rust-Oleum. I'll bet if you wanted to add a little brown or gold to it in a closely metered amount you could get a really good match. Then you would still have to figure out what to use for a flattener with Rust-Oleum.
Still, my money is with a quart of PPG. For sixty bucks you can just have the PPG dealer mix ya up the right stuff while your having a cup of coffee and dognut and have done with it. I guess this might sound kind of snooty but by the time your into striping and painting the interior of your truck, ya orta at least have a cheap Harbor Freight spray gun and small compressor which is more than adequate to apply canned paint instead of trying to do the job with a rattle can. I just happen to really love that color and I want my interior to look as factory original as I can make it so I'm springing for the "good stuff" Engine color? I'm happy with the Hirsch stuff... it ain't VCCA approved but I already have it so I'm using it. I mean, how picky can a guy get over engine color with a 4-bbl carb and dual exhausts sitting there? I've got a lot of fire engine red paint to get off one of these days and I still plan a complete rebuild of the bottom end when I finally tear the cab off. She runs real sweet but eventually I still want to freshen everything up so she’s as good as new. The bottom pictures is one that Dave posted from the AACA Grand National meet in Melbourne, FLA. I was just making a comparison of the gray paint, which, I wasn’t gonna talk about anymore!!! Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

I forgot that not everybody gets to live and drive in the dust, pollen, and rain encrusted place we call Oregon. I suppose I could keep an engine looking that good if I detailed it and wiped off the grime every time I got home. There's about a two week period every year in late August that I can drive without getting my car dirty.

Just not when it's raining or snowing. Makes a big difference you know, and do I wipe things down once in a while, sure, ya gotta wipe off those inevitable oil leaks. and getting the bugs off that spray through the radiator on a night ride to Skips Drive-In is the biggest challenge for me. Mines not a daily driver either, I've got a GMC Sierra for that, and I figured why after spending literally hundreds of hours taking everything that can be unbolted down to bare metal and painstakingly rebuilding and masking and painting it doesn't make sense to drive her through mud puddles. After all she's given over a half century of service and been abused daily for most of her life, so I feel it’s time for her retirement. Sorta like her turn to be put out to pasture, that way maybe my grandchildren will get to enjoy a ride in the county some nice warm Saturday evening in July, 2050 on her 100th birthday. I would have to agree with those that knock the trailer queens. If all I was gonna do when I got her finished up, (which is quite a ways off yet) was put it on a pedestal and never drive it that would be a shame. I have repeated this many times, as Tim L put it, "I look at this old truck as a rolling museum." Rolling being the key word here but not necessarily rolling through the job site mud puddles or slush covered roads. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL
