Hey guys

My new 235 smokes at idle and when leaving a stop. Doesn't smoke running down the road, or when cold. Engine has 600 miles on it and runs great. Umbrella seals on intakes, total seal moly piston rings.

WTF?

Chip

Maybe you got a case of bad ring seal from a "driveway engine breakin"and the cylinder walls glazed? Maybe the oil rings were installed improperly?Generally the symptoms you describe are from loose guides, but the seals should mask the guide problem if there was one. However, rings can also cause smoke like that.Although the cranking compression is good, the rings can fail to seal properly when the engine is running. Excessive bearing clearances may throw too much oil on the cylinder walls for the rings to deal with, your oil pressure is ok, right? Are you pussy footing around with the new engine? Run it harder, see if the problem lessens. If all else fails,I recomend a Latino woman, good wine and a twister, things will be better in the morning.

What color is the smoke? Black? Blue? Whitish?

I'm suffering a little cylinder wash down. You can smell a tinge of oil at the exhaust. I plan on adjusting the float tomorrow and changing the oil (some fuel in the oil). Will post results.

Chiphead hopefully you can cure this smoke (whatever the origin) without a major teardown (AGAIN) eek

Chip - Them's smoke signals being sent to you be Chief. I assume you've tried your tin-foil beanie and found it didn't work with smoke signals. It will take a while, but I will get you a translation by the end of the day. grin

OK, now it gets stranger. I'm looking at my exhaust pipes, and I see steel wool. Yes, there's steel wool-like metal in my exhaust pipes, stuck to the oil residue! Is this from my smitty mufflers or what?

If I had a TV, Chip's life with his 235 would be the show I would want to watch. grin

Yeah, "who wants to marry an obsessive gearhead". Only problem is I haven't found any contestants.

My friends and I have joked about me and Gary getting an automotive show on public access. So far I've got one episode, but it plays over and over and over.....

We've also talked about getting our circle of friends on Jerry Springer, the title would be "which of my wives are you sleeping with, and why is my sister answering your phone?" But that's a topic for another time....

Back to the problem: Why is my car smoking? Is this why proffit was knocking the total seal rings? But the shop says they've had good luck with them. Could the metal shavings from the oil pump failure have damaged the valve stems or guides in 100 miles?

The steel wool is from your smittys.

I guess you could test the valve seals by temporarily plugging the oil flow to the head and see if it still smokes.

I'm surprised you still have friends, with that curse you have.

Rusty,

good points, I've been meaning to dig out the ring instructions and check installation and break in procedure.

thanks!

If you get a big cloud after pulling away from an idle, this is a classic valve guide/seal problem. Rings will produce their smoke when you rev it.

You used some funny rings. They are probably taking their time breaking in. I would just put some miles on it and watch oil consumption etc.

In other words, just shut up and drive...

Is this the same muffler you had on the last engine? It could be ful of oil and what you see is still burning out of it. The steel wool is the packing material, try changing the muffler.

I have now been able to interpret the smoke signals. They say:

Sell all your vehicles and tools. You need to return to a simpler life where you have no vehicles more powerful than a bicycle. grin

Chip my son, my son: What am I going to do with you!! Knowing 235's yes I have rebuilt a few, your impatience is going to drive you nuts!! Drive it for awhile, check the oil, break it in right. Sounds like the smitty's let loose just a litttle from the oil of the past engine. Give it time. Break it in eaaaasy.

I wonder if we can get Ding Dongs to advertise for The Chiphead and 235 SHOW. Please don't go on Jerry Show, Maws has enough bad habits let alone waiting to see you on TV. popcorn The Truth is Out There (Thats why I use 350's)
