Does anyone have dual cast iron exaust manifolds with a hydramatic trans? The 235 w/hydro has a lot of linkage from the trans to the carb. Will the linkage clear the duel manifold, or does something need to be modified?

On the same note. Does anyone have experience with dual carbs and the hydro linkage?

This is a stock 54 chevy.

Lonnie,

I don't have this combo, but have worked on a members truck that had the Fentons, dual Rochesters AND the Hydra-Matic.

I rebuilt/installed the carburetor to tranny kickdown linkage. The linkage fit fine, but you had to be a chimp to get your hands into the space available to address the linkage at the bellcrank area...a true bi@#ch!

The linkage from bellcrank to carburetors looked like a pretzel and if you haven't selected your intake manifold yet, I would highly recommend the type with the cast in provisions for a throttle rod.

The funky Offy linkage has never worked and has never been improved. I did a 3X1 setup 30 years ago and it was the same dippy linkage...a skinny little rod with brazed on tabs.

If you have to access the linkage where it attaches to the block you will need tiny hands or long needle nose pliers, but once on, it works perfectly.

Stuart, thanks for the info.

I haven't selected an intake yet. I am looking for an Edelbrock, which has the cast in linkage tabs, but have not found one yet. I am also thinking about building my own manifold.

Bill Miles uses the Fentons on a 53 GMC hydra-matic truck but GMC and Chev use different linkage. The hydra-matic actually uses a different pivot location on the side of the block. There is a spring loaded kickdown style linkage and the link that goes up from bellcrank to carb is adjustable length. I have a 54 Chevy truck with hydra-matic in it that currently has clifford tube headers. I plan to remove them and go back to a corvette split exhaust manifold to get heat back to the Offy intake with dual Rochesters. There are some pics on my webshots site. I really don't think you will have problem with linkage clearance but I understand that there is some clearance work that needs to be done to use the Offy intake with Fenton exhaust. I just sold the 261 (yes, 261) engine & cast iron HydraMatic tranny out of my 1st Edition 55. It had the Offy intake with dual Carter Webers, and slpit Fenton exhaust.

The combiantino worked pretty well, BUT we did not get actual wide open throttle when we floored the pedal, as the combination of 3-D geomtery for the throttle linkage, plus the need to synchronize the control lever to the tranny, is a bit tricky.

My pro mechanic freind Randy was confident he could do it, but it was pointless to spend the time since we knew I was selling the drivetrain within weeks.

It ran and sounded wonderful, and got lots of comments from anyone who knew AD trucks.
