How tight do the lock bolts fit? Do I need a 4 lb sledge to pound them in? I have the king pin lined up in the spindle, but it is awfully hard to drive the lock bolt in. Might it be that I just don't have the strength that's needed? Do I need to get the neighbor guy?

DO you have the flat side of the kingpin facing the hole for the lock-pin?
Does the kingpin have the flat spot for the lock-pin in the center (top to bottom) on the kingpin or is it more toward one end ?
I do a lot of them (kingpins) and do not remember haw each one is machined (I would go nuts eek grin eek

Yes, I did make sure the flat spot in the king pin is in the right place in the spindle. The flat spot is centered.

49erGal: The flat spots have to match king pin to bolt but I'm sure you are aware of this. Lightly hammer on the lock pin if it won't budge make sure the inside race hasn't slid down just a hair.

Change mine a year ago and had to lighty tap to get them to go thru. Guarenteed you want them tight.

Everything is lined up. It won't go with light tapping. It looks like the flat spot on the king pin is not flat enough? I bought the king pin set from Chevy Duty.

I have a long tapered punch I drive in the hole
to line up the king pin. if it is turned just a
little the lock pin won,t go in very far.
Dont use a bigger hammer. It should,t take much
to get it most of the way & then draws up with the nut. smile

Everything is lined up. The race has not slipped, the king pin is centered properly as is the pin bolt. It will not go.

One of the two flat spots are not deep enough. The lock pin does fine without the king bolt in, and visa versa. This is on both sides. I have switched king pins side to side and nothing helps.

Thank you. I've emailed them with the problem, complete with pictures. I let you know what happens, whether it's them or me.

Haven't done a Stovebolt lately, but a Furd kingpin has a tapered lock bolt slot. Try turning them upside down from their present position, and see if the taper works better.

The groove on the kingpin is not tapered. It is quite long, much longer than the pin width. The pin is round and has a flat side with maybe a very small taper to it. The pin should go in to where the threads are showing through. Then some light tapping should move it more to be able to use the threads. You don't want to hammer it hard, that would be a big mistake.

If the kingpin is off by just a few degrees, and it is tight, you can have a problem like this. The hint about the tapered drift is a very useful thing to try.

Had everything lined up and when light taps would not work, that's when I started hollerin' for help. I tried all the suggestions, and it's still a no go.

49erGal,
how did your old pins come out, drilling or tapping? If they came out in 1 piece, it may be of interest to try them for fit.

I tapped them out, but they were trashed, as the "taps" were none too gentle.
I do have some shorter lock bolts from a 53/54 Chevy car. Does anyone know if the circumference is the same?

49erGal,
is there a chance that there is a slight distortion at the opening where the threaded end should emerge? To check for this, if you insert the pin backwards, that is back to front, the results should be identical.

Also, if you are very close to success, putting the pin in the freezer for a few hours may help.

I've tried them ever which way except side ways! The fit from either side is the same. I'll try the freezer method next.

I give up on this set of king pins. I've ordered another set.
