I did the "put the float in hot water and look for bubbles" trick, and saw about four places where the bottom half of the brass float assembly is leaking. Close inspection showed lines of bubbles coming from hairline cracks 1/4 to 3/8 inch long. I got out my plumbing equipment and started trying to cover these with solder, only to discover more hairline cracks. Yikes ! So, I need some advice on how to proceed. A few choices come to mind:

1) find a new float (any suggestions of sources ? Jim Carter and Filling Station don't list floats.)

2) Keep glopping solder on the float until I manage to cover all of the cracks.

3) Fill the float with "Great Stuff" expanding urethane foam (no idea if this material is gasoline-proof).

4) Solder thin patches of brass on the cracks.

5) Squirt some sort of sealant inside the float.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks a bunch.

Anything you add to that float is going to make it heavier and mess with the float level. If you can find a new float, use it. I found one for my B from Dan's classic auto parts in Portland for about $14. It was NOS. Also, email CarbKing, he knows where to get all that stuff
