We got further than we hoped last night (Thursday): Red got naked. (Clean up those minds, guys!)
Randy can only be described as incredible. He came over after a full day’s work at his day job, and then proceeded to undress Red while I assisted.
He opened the radiator petcock and let Red piddle his coolant into a container while he did other things. The hood came off first. Out came all the wiring connections that tied together any combination of cab, engine, and front clip. Then, the mechanical, exhaust, and plumbing connections to the inline six. Then the radiator. Then the front clip as an undisturbed assembly which he and I hand carried away from the truck (only ONE fender bolt broke – had been corroded by a past heater core leak). Then the engine mounts and the tranny mounts.
By the end of the evening, Randy announced that had he thought we would move so quickly, he would have brought the tranny drain pan and specialized hardware needed for the engine/tranny lift. As it is, we are set to begin engine-with-tranny extraction first thing Saturday. This is the value of having someone with over 30 years street rodding and restoration experience on hand when things need to get done.
It’s hard not to just explode with excitement.
Look at these photos!
Hood off!

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh16/JimGnitecki/Redgetsnaked003.jpgGood news! Notice that the Pitman arm is angled downward toward the front. That means we can drop Red a bit with no negative impact on steering alignment.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh16/JimGnitecki/Redgetsnaked004.jpgNotice how much vertical clearance we have above even this tall inline six with dual carb intake, before we run into the hood? Isn’t that engine a beauty?
