I've seen that the 4 speeds are SM420's, what was the 3 speed transmission used in the 1954 3100?
Thanks!
Samantha

There were actually two different ones if you look at the servive manual. Somewhere I have pictures that I took out of my truck if you need them.

I know there was a standard 3 speed and a heavy duty 3 speed, but did they have a number or designation like the SM420's? Who made them?

I think wdoftexas had some more info on who made each trans but here is what I found in the sales data book 1954: Standard 3 speed transmission series 31-36-3700. The gears are carburized, shot-peened, and have chamfered teeth for long service life. Anti-friction bearings on the clutch shaft, main, and countershafts assure alignment and long, trouble free service. Then it mentions the column shift. RPO Synchromesh HD 3 Speed Transmission for series 3000: Synchromesh HD 3-Speed Transmission with steering column gearshift is available as a regular production option for 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton trucks. Ruggedly constructed and with greater reduction in first and second speeds, this optional transmission is ideally suited to house-to-house delivery work where many stops and starts are made each day. Quietness and long life are assured by wide faced helical gears with great tooth contact area. It is listed as RPO 316C,D,E,F,G,Q,H depending on the truck model it is in
