Question 1: My tranny has a red wire coming out of the top of the case. I assume this needs 12 volts but what is the best way to hook this wire up?

Question 2: Also on the top of the case there is a small tube that runs out for about 2.5" and appears to be a vent of some kind. Do I leave this alone or attach a hose?

Thanks for the help, I was raised on 4 speeds and am a learner here.

Is the wire perhaps a neutral safety switch or reverse light switch?

It's coming out from the driver's side of the tranny. Where is it suppose to connect? Great looking 57' Heavy.

It's not that simple. The 700R4 has a harness connector on the drivers side that controls the TCC solenoid, third gear switch, 4th gear switch and 4-3 pulse switch depending on the year and engine application. You can purchase an aftermarket harness for your trans that will control these. The proper Throttle Valve (TV) cable and adjustment is also very important. Seach this site for the many threads on this subject.

the tube is just left as is. you will see thoes on 400s and 350s also

I think the red wire is to control converter lockup, which has no proper way of hooking it up unless you have the control for it. check out transmission center.net for choices on aftermarket stuff. you can even run without it but the converter will lock too soon and dog down your engine.

I guess mine must be an older 700R4,as it has no wire.It is supposed to be a 1984 trans,that was rebuilt for racing.It has a wicked low gear in it,shifts very smooth and with a 350 V/8 and 3:90 rearend the truck gets 20 MPG.

does it have a plug terminal above the oil pan on the driver side? If so that would be the lock up harness for it. I have a th350c in my garage from about that era.

Yeah, it has a four prong (female) socket with only one wire coming out.

Sounds like the valve body has been converted and the one wire is for the TCC control. I would pull the pan and see if the wire goes to the TCC solenoid located in the front pump and held on with two bolts.

Well it helps to check things out throughly. It has a note on the end of the wire telling me it should be run to a 12volt. The other side has the hook for the kick down. I think I may have it all figured out.

Just a thought while reading this thread. You might want to run this wire to a switch so that you can manually override.Some of the kits I've seen have this option.
