If i were to change rearends in my 54 1/2 ton, and keep my 235 motor, what would i be looking for that would be the simpliest to drop in. i know i have to ditch the torque tube but what else am i looking at? is it cheaper to just buy the conversion kits for the existing rearend?. all i am looking for is daily driver stuff but be able to run the speed limit out on the highways and byways.

If I'm not mistaken, torque tube setups use a transmission that bolts to the torque tube. Non-TT transmissions are easy to find. You'll need a driveshaft, too.

A friend of mine has a '54 with transmission, driveshaft and rear axle from a '58, or at least that is what he was told.

The PO of my 54 truck swapped a 1973 4WD chevy 12 bolt rear. Looked like that was easy except for new shock mounts on the frame. But he also put in a later sm420 trans and built a drive shaft.

if it dosen't need fixed, break it
