Well it's all your guys fault! After reading a lot of the posts on this site, I've decided I need to learn body work. I just bought a bunch of new hand tools and a book to get started. I'm sure I'll be pretty bad so I only have one way to go and that would be to get better. My question is, what do you recommend for block sanding. I've seen a lot of people using the Dura-Block products. Are they good or should I look for something else? ohwell

I am pretty much in the same boat, I got a couple body working books a while back and I buy things as I can.
I did pick up a large about 18" by 3" durablock and it seems to work really well, I would like to get a few more sizes and shapes at some point.
From my limited experience I would recommend the Dura-Block

I really like my dura blocks. Wouldn't work without them. But I also have a lot of other sanding blocks too.

You can't go wrong with dura block.

Can you reuse the sanding paper if you need to change to a different grit before you use up the one already on?

Or am I tipping you off as to how cheap I am?

Hey Woody,
I would think you could not pull it off and then stick it back on. Just have to have a bunch of the blocks. I'm going to give them a try. What else would a person need besides them?

Mr. Bruce,

I have a small set of the Dura-Block sanding blocks and have been pretty happy with them. I got my Dura-Block set in an effort to look more like a professional.:) Not sure that it did that....I still look like a hick...
I have used a piece of 5/8 birch ply wood in the same manner as my Dura Block and it seem to work about as good. I have a piece of 3/4 that I use when trying to level the plastic filler. I would love to have a air file, but I figured I would appreciate it more if I put in the elbow grease. I just took some scrap birch plywood and cut it cross ways of the outer grain of the wood so that it would flex. I have even used those old paint sticks wrapped with paper. That worked pretty good, it can be hard to hold and sometime the latex gloves get caught in the paper.
Oh, if you don't know this, (i did not) always use gloves when doing any sort of sanding. It keeps the oils from your hands out of your work. Also there is no telling what is in some of this stuff you sanding off too.

I always keep my eyes open for different things that would make good sanding blocks. Even a wooden 2x4 that is the correct lenght to block a door or panel.

Anything flat and not too flexible will work actually. I've seen paint sticks used too.

I think I'll head over to Home Depot and buy some nice hardwood boards... save some money.

Have you seen the price of hardwoods lately?!?!? i doubt you'll be saving any money!!
My grandpa used to tell me not to take any wooden nickels... at the price of lumber these days, i think I'll take all the wooden nickels I can get!

You're right! I just bought two more dura-Blocks today, a 12" and a round one. I also got one of THESE to help with the fenders.
