I've looked high & low and need some help. Is the 235 bellhousing the same regardless of the tranny behind it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hy a.d.-hawk, I believe all the truck housings are the same, the car housings are different in many ways, hope that helps.

That does, 3B. I'm interested in changing out the 4 speed for a T-5. I figured they were. I've run into many differences between a 3100 & 3600, and thought maybe that there was a difference between this too. Thanks.

The bellhousing and the cross member it rests on changed in 54. The mounts are slanted or angled instead of flat.

Thanks Frank. If I choose to redo the original clutch, are they pretty difficult & expensive to replace?

I went back to read about your truck & noticed you mentioned that your truck had '76 plates on it when you bought it. So does mine. Did everybody just park their old trucks in the mid-'70s?

Seems that way. The first old Chevy pickup I bought back in 99 (55-1st) had 78 plates on it. Maybe 20-25 years was considered a useable life-span for a car or truck back then. Go figure....

The mid 70,s had a severe gas shortage & economic recession. That might have had something to do with it.

My question is similar to this one... I have a 250 L6 in my '69 Chevy C-10, with a 3 speed B&W OverDrive out of (what I was told) was from a late 50's Chevy.

Will the Borg & Warner 3 speed bellhousing bolt up to an S-10 T5?

Also, will I be able to use the clutch/ flywheel?

thanks!

In response to Joe, The bellhousing has the same bolt pattern, flywheel will be OK, probably need a different clutch for the T5. There are differences in the OD transmissions, if you have an early one with a 4 bolt side cover it has a non syncro first gear. The later one is a Saganaw, full syncro, 7 bolt side cover. If you have a late trans it is probably more of a heavy duty unit than the T5. If your current OD works you probably won't gain much for the expense of the conversion.

I think that some S10s that had the big V6 used a T5 with a regular Chevy bolt pattern. The small V6 and 4s have a different pattern. I put one of the latter in my '53 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 270 GMC in it. I made a 3/8 adapter plate, had to change the clutch plate, and build a rear mount. With truck length shifter the pattern is wide. I'm working on that. It was not as easy as I thought it would be as the top tranny bolts are too near the original holes. If you use the V8-big V6 T5 it will bolt up but you have to shorten the input shaft 3/8". Also you must use an S10 rear housing or your shifter will be in your seat. Well, not yours but your truck's. If your 3 speed OD is a Saganaw and it works I'd keep it. If it doesn't work I'd fix it. There are several different 3 speed ratios. You can also put that OD on a Saganaw 4 speed. Hot Rod magazine May 1970, I think, had an article. Mine works well but I wouldn't do it again. By the way if yours is a Saganaw 3 speed OD and you decide to replace it I'd like to buy it OD working or not. Good luck!
