I'm going to end up going with a new engine, because the old inline has had the heads removed for several years, out in the weather, and the rust is rampant in the cylinders. However, in an attempt to learn more about my truck, I tried to identify the block casting number. The number engraved next to the distributor hole on the block is "LASI00493". I have already checked at inliners.org, and found similar letter pre-fixes, but not a match. Am I looking at the wrong number, or do I just have an oddity or rarity? Any help would be much appreciated.

To properly id the block, there is a casting number aft of that by the starter. It might be behind the starter. It should be a 6 to 8 digit number that sticks out of the casting. Go to www.inliners.org under casting #s to decode it.

Could the LASI.... be LAS1....? I have a 235 with an LAQ number stamped there. (L hints '53) I think Ken and BigGreen48 have LAQ stamped engines. I finally found my casting number (3701481) under a ridge in front of the fuel pump. Never would have found it while the engine was in the truck.
1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.
