For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 54 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 54 | I cleaned my springs on the front of my 1951 Chevrolet, trying to get a better ride. I also removed 3 springs from the front, trying to get a better ride. What I got was such a bumpy ride that a friend of mine was behind me the other night and he could actually see the truck bouncing, any ideas? | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | Did you install new shock absorbers at the same time? Sounds like they're not damping the spring action properly.

What does damping mean? what size or kind of shock do I need? | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | A sping will cycle through it's range of travel until it runs out of energy. The shocks role is to control this motion (damping) by providing resistance. Generally, you want no more than 2 or 3 bounces (getting less and less every time) after jouncing the spring though it's travel. For shocks, Id say some sort of gas charged shock would be best, especially since you have removed some leaves. Monroe shows part # 80312 available for the front in their Sensa-Trac line. I personally prefer Gabriels (don't have a # for ya on that), the Red Ryders are very good (that's what I have).

I removed two leafs each and placed the shortest leaf on top, a tip from Waldo53, in his words ,a poor mans drop, pics here. I haven't drove my 4t6 in about 5 years so I don't know how the ride will be. I also changed from lever shocks to tube that I purchased at the local FLAPS. Have fun and good luck! Dan | | |
