Hi all,

I must move on to plan 2. Again, I usually have about 2 hours on weekends to do work on the trucks so time/work must be calculated.

What I have found is that there is a lot of varnish/shlack in the bottom of the intake maniford. Maybe from left behind gas. The oil from the engine was not to bad. Black but no chunks or nasty stuff. After pulling the distributor and down draft tube I found the pushrods and lifters free. The valves popped when tapped with a rubber mallet.

This all seems good so the engine is either froze in the cylinders or something else. Somebody mentioned the clutch. Do I need to pull the transmission (it is a saginaw 3 speed) to check the clutch? And would that stop the engine from turning?

Is there anything else that I could check before taking major stuff off the engine like the head and oil pan?

I have an engine stand that I can use. If I take off the transmission do I attach the engine - via the bell housing to the stand?

Please. Any advice would be helpful.

You have 2 hours to work on the truck and you need to understand what is keeping the engine from turning over. I hope I understand your problem correctly.
If you suspect the transmission is in gear and the clutch is holding the engine from turning, take 30 minutes to remove your drive shaft. 4 bolts at the rear yoke. Once you've removed that from the equation, the engine should turn even if the clutch is stuck/transmission is in gear. If the engine still does not turn over, take out the spark plugs and try again. If the engine still will not turn over, the cylinders are frozen. This plan will give you an idea in 2 hours.

Unless you've got a very heavy duty engine stand, mounting it with the bellhousing attached makes it very tipsy. I'd reccomend removing the trans, flywheel, and bellhousing, then reattaching the flywheel to give you something to pry against once the engine is on the stand.

Several years ago a 235 with the bellhousing attached tipped a stand over in my school shop, and a kid needed 37 stitches to put his foot back together. He was wearing heavy work shoes, and still got some major damage when the engine fell on his foot.
