i just wanted to let people know that i was tring to identify my rear axle from my 1971 chevy c20 cheyenne and had alot of great help and insite from forum pages but was still left unclear on waht i had. i found a site that raelly help to identify all types of rear axles from many age groups. i hope people can find it as handy and as insightful as i did . go to www.ringpinion.com as it turns out the axle in my truck is an eaton ho52/72 still unclear as to which one exactly but its a great starting point. this site even has replacement parts for all rear ends including eatons. well happy trails my work continues.

That's a great website. I am still trying to 'cipher which rear diff I have in my '59. It is in need of new parts (seals, gears, etc) and I need to measure everything so I can figure it out. It seems to have had a previous catastrophic failure before I picked up the truck 20 years ago. We found a piece of (ring?)gear tooth down inside the right axle tube. I am trying to locate the proper oil seal for the axle. Old one had a National #5801. Need a cross-reference guide for National seals and bearings

The HO52 was 3/4 ton, the HO72 was 1 ton. The only real difference was the gear ratio and brake size.
