#37074 04/20/2003 10:33 PM | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 | Last week when Teen48Flatbed and I retrieved his '48 2-ton, we had to drive it 160 miles in low-range because it kept popping out of high-range.
Initial checking revealed that the 'high' side of the vacuum unit wouldn't hold vacuum while the 'low' side would. Pulled the unit off and found oil on the 'high' side. First local parts store I went to didn't offer much hope of having the oil seal until the counterman saw the numbers on the original seal. Cross reference is to a Chicago Rawhide 12336 of which he had several in stock.
Put it back together and now it holds vacuum but it still jumps out of high range. Pulled it apart again and this time I pulled the bolt/spring assembly out of the shifter shaft and lo and behold, some yahoo P.O. had tightened the spring down to the point that it wouldn't compress any further. Overall length is supposed to be 3-1/2" and it was right at 3". Readjusted said spring and she's a shiftin' fool now.
