Hi,

I've just stripped my 1941 3/4 ton Chevy brakes to find that someone has stripped all the shoes, springs etc :-( Probably to restore and then they just gave up...

I can manage to find all the new bits I need from Jim Carter except the actuator bar/atriculating link/anchor pin see Fig 1.

I require front and back sets and would be happy to get used ones.

Any help with who could supply these to Scotland.

Before anyone could answer we need to know if your truck has 11 or 14 inch brakes. The 3/4 ton was supplied both ways.

The front and back drums are the same - 11 inch.

In your profile you list a '41 1/2 ton , in your first post it is a 3/4 ton , are there 2 trucks or is it a typo? Are the brakes the same type on both trucks?

I created the profile when I bought the truck - as a 1/2 ton - but when it arrived, and after doing some checks I identified it as a 3/4 ton.

I've just been out to measure the drums and they are 11 inch on the front and back.

If you do not find these links, I can send a detailed drawing of the ones on my ’41 ¾ ton. They look to be fairly easy to fabricate.

I just asked 'cause I still have the links off my '40 from when I changed the brakes to Bendix. Are they likely to be the same?

The Jim Carter catalogue says the brake shoes are the same from 36-50 as are all the springs etc so they are very likely to be the same.

Do you need the handbrake link off the rear shoes? 1 each side and the ecentric adjusting bolts? WHAT ABOUT THE HUGE u SHAPED MOUNT FOR THE FRONT SHOES? THIS WILL ADD A BUNCH OF WEIGHT TO THE PARCEL oops ,,, darn caps lock .. I just dug this stuff outta the shed , 3kgs , without packaging. Let me know.

I have the 4 large U shaped mounts that the shoes attach to and the park brake cable clips.

I'm sure I don't have the handbrake link - all I have is 2 cables coming into the drum and was wondering how the handbrake attached - any pictures :-)

I was also under the truck looking at the park brake lever and think there may be a ratchet - or something - missing from here. If you have any pictures of what should be here that would be great.

Very interested in the parts you have (except the U brackets) - let me know what it will cost, including the packaging and I can pay by PayPal, cheque or whatever mechanism you want.

I've got some brake parts in the shed as well. Let me know if there is anything else that you need after you get the parts from Dusty. Also if there are any other wee bits and pieces that you need for the truck. I'm coming home (to Scotland) in May for a holiday and I can bring some wee things over. Wee things mind no bloody engine blocks or diffs!!!

I have a big list about to go on order with Jim Carter (or another supplier depending on his quote) so this, and a few electrical bits I can get locally, will hopefully get it on the road.

I'll keep in touch as I re-build in case there are any bits I forget about, or haven't thought about since the drums are all empty just now.

..unless you can get 2 new running boards in hand luggage :-)

I'm originally from just ourside Bannockburn. I'll have a look in the shed after work today and see what brake parts I have. I remember the time when you could just about get a pair of running boards on as hand luggage!!

Thanks. A lovely part of the country, and very famous for us Scots :-)

Took the truck bed to bits over the last 2 days - and burnt out 4 grinding disks and a grinder!! A weekend to remove the bed sides and, fenders and running boards which will then give me access to the chassis to rub doen and paint.

Have all the other bits on order, but have about 5 weeks till they arrive :-(

Parcel posted today Dave, look for it in 2 or 3 weeks , let me know if it doesn't turn up in a month. You will still need to find the 2 handbrake push rods , they are about 5" long and 3/8" dia with a split in the end that slips over the center rib of the shoe , and the cut out in the handbrake lever (supplied) should be a pic in the w/shop manual.
Yep , I just looked, in the '47 manual it is shown as a link in a pic for adjusting the rear brake toggle. Pretty much hidden by the shoes and axle flange , but the end with the spring can be seen just below the ecentric bolt . Maybe Carters will have the part , the springs are in the parcel.

I had a look in the shed but don't have the pushrods you need. Just been back over the parts again to make sure that I didn't miss anything but no luck I'm afraid. Might pay to put an ad in the parts wanted section. I'm sure you won't have much problem getting a couple.
