#37031 11/20/2002 7:27 AM | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 39 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 39 | i know nothing about the 228 other than it was the original engine for my truck. i would some day like to put one back in my truck. i was thinking of trying to find one now and slowly rebuilding it so that i will have it later when i am ready to put it in. are parts available for these engines? are they notorious for any certain problems? i know of one nearby in a wrecking yard. what should i look for, and what would be a good price? thanks in advance for any info!

Parts are still available to rebuild them, plan on spending a little more on GMC engine parts than those of a Chevy 216 or 235.
As for a salvage yard price, the yards around here all get about 300 for a motor. I am not sure what is a fair price in your area. Be sure that no matter what the price, that the salvage yard owner stands behind the motor. The first thing you will need to do is get the motor magnafluxed and checked for cracks. If you have a cracked block or more commonly a cracked head, he should replace it or refund your cash..
