Took the first ride around the neighborhood in the 1949 3100 after finishing brake rebuild.

Speedo needle was waving at me. What causes this? Cable or speedo head?

Thanks!

I would try lubing the cable first, it is the easiest fix. I have had mine bounce and re-lubing the cable calmed it down.

Good luck...

Good advice, lube the cable first and drive for a while to let the grease it do it's work.

I disconnected mine at the transmission, and lubed the bottom third with lithium grease. The center drive cable usually slips out easily - so don't drop it on the ground!

Lithium grease gets hard when its cold. I'd use either real speedo cable lube or a moly grease. Be sure to work it into the cable. If the cable has any kinks or fraying, replace the cable and the housing.

Gotta agree with Fred on this one. I wouldn't use
lithium grease on the cable. That stuff gets rock hard. Some good clear silicone grease works well.
And, last's a good long time.

I didn't know lithium grease hardened. I use the rattle can lithium grease and it's pretty thin when I apply it.

I'll have to put some in the fridge and see what happens!
