I'm having trouble finding a company that will insure my truck. I will mainly be using it in parades and car shows, but I may actually use it to fight off the wildfires that happen often around here. Anybody else got theirs insured?

Yes, we have our '65 GMC fire engine (it's in the Gallery) insured with Hagerty's. You can find them, as well as other insurers of larger antique trucks in our LInks Section.

They're very reasonable, but you have have to have a lockable garage to keep it in (they made me send them a picture of mine in the garage).

Good luck!

John

I contacted them earlier today and it was only going to be about $138 annually. They did want pictures of it in the shop so I was curious what that was about, but I will probably go with them. Thanks

As John said, Hagerty's is superb, even for big trucks. They even will honor their breakdown-tow coverage for big trucks (on a flatbed carrier). Full-replacement coverage with full deductibles.

And, you can drive it for pleasure, etc, as long as it is not your daily driver to work, and as long as you are not using it to earn money. And, as John stated, you must store in it a locked garage and have other fully-insured regular vehicles (as daily drivers).

Mine is insured with Grundy Collector Car Insurance. Am switching to American Collectors Insurance because it is cheaper. Both companies require locked storage facility. Limited to pleasure like parades etc. Both deny liability for persons riding on the outside.

Though I've never had a "claim" situation on any of my fire trucks, I've ALWAYS liked Hagerty. Very nice to deal with, seem to have a real supportive attitude about the old iron.

Only problem I have, is they don't want people riding ON the truck. Now, I ask you: What's the point of having a fire truck, if people can't ride on it in a parade?!!

Honestly, sometimes I think the lawyers have ruined everything for us. The rest of the times, I'm convinced that it's the terrorists who have ruined everything.

Good thing working on these old trucks is so therapeutic, or I might be depressed!

Think there would be any problem with just insuring it as a 2 ton truck and leave out the Fire truck desription?

I do. I think if you do not give the insurance company the facts and then you need a claim, your just giving them reason to to pay off. I use State Farm here in Virginia Beach for a 2 ton firetruck. It costs me $25.12 every six months but it can't be a daily driver and must be in a garage(mine is parked in a 24hr staffed fire station). I think that is why mine is so cheap plus the other five cars and trucks I have also help.

Good luck.
