For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 98 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 98 | I filled all 4 of my double-acting shocks up to the proper level with jack fluid. I have good resistance pushing the arms down. However, the resistance is much less when pulling the arms up. Should the resistance be equal both ways, or are they acting more like single-acting shocks? I don't think there's any more I can do to fix them - other than paying $500 to get refurbished ones. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 | If they are anything like what was on my '36, they really only work one way.

There should also be no free play on the arm movement. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 1,048 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 1,048 | Your profile says you have a '41 half ton, are you sure you have double acting shocks and not the standard single action units?? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 98 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 98 | I'm sure they're double-acting. I'm restoring it but I don't have any info from the previous owners if the truck came with them or they were upgraded later. I'd be happy with them giving resistance in only one direction if I don't have to pay for refurbished ones. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 8 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 8 | How are you sure they are double action? I would like to know, mine on the 50 1/2 ton are single action 'I think' becouse they only work one way. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 98 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 98 | Look through some owners manuals for pictures to compare single vs double. Mine have their model numbers on their end caps. I matched them to the numbers in my 41 owners manual. check out chevy.tocmp.com for manuals. | | |
