The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts Extra gear box & extra frame

So, this 46 (1 1/2 ton)has an extra gear box mounted next to the transmission. It gives what seems to be a low and high range (and I mean low!) was this for creeping across the farm field to fill the potato dump body? Was it a stock item? Also, the frame has a 1/4 inch by about 8 inch piece of steel fastened on both of the frame members(vertically) their entire length. It certainly appears stock, or well installed. Even the running board bolts go through it and appear stock. As a dump, did it require additional stregth and so was installed by the body manufacturer? As always, thank you for the help, Scott

Hy Scott54, that extra transmission is an auxilliary transmission or "brownie" as to why it was installed that's anybodies guess. The piece of steel is a frame reinforcement, installed at the factory with rivets, used to increase the strength of the frame, and thereby raise the G.V.W., hope that helps.
