For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 18 | We are refurbishing a 48 453 with a duel speed Timken rear end and was wondering if there were any sources for the oil seals. We have found other seals but are having a tough time finding these. Help! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | I don't know a lot about the big trucks but Rob who runs the GMC site aquired a large AD truck last year. What a mechanic did for him was install oil seals that fit the shaft but had a slightly smaller outside diameter. The mechanic wrapped the outside with several layers of electrical tape and apparently that is a good fix that is commonly used. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 | Is there a name, and/or part number on the old seals. That will help with cross referencing. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy fireman290, if I'm reading your post correctly you're working with a double reduction Timken two speed. The following are the numbers I found for that rear axle Pinion GM-2240314 = C/R 23841 = Napa NOS23841 $23.99 Inner rear wheel [hub] seal GM-2227352 = C/R 36314 = Napa NOS36314 $26.49 Outer wheel seal, two different options on this one late with grease packed bearings, with shaft 4.063" and 5.506" O.D. = C/R 40590 Outer wheel seal early with shaft 3.938" and 5.506 O.D. = C/R 39423, seal with sleeve C/R 40360, or kit C/R 1219, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 18 | Sorry guys, I had to work today .I just got home. Thanks alot for the ideas and the #s. I realy fell in love with this old big bolt because it was the first fire truck out community owned and we were able to bring it home after 30 years. It is alot like Virginiafiretruck's story. When I am able to I will post some pics. This will be a labor of love for the few of us that love this truck. Thanks 3B, That is what we are working with. We have a man that has a 36' Gmc wreaker that has the wheel seals and I will get the numbers to him. He use to be the mechanic for the truck.

I'm particularly fond of the '47-'55 450 3 ton, & 470 3 1/2 ton Jimmies. Is there anyway you can get a couple of pictures of that '36 GMC Wrecker also. And 3B, Thanks for the part numbers. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 18 | I had to sign up on webshots. Love that chrome grille. Think you can get photos of that '36 GMC Wrecker? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 18 | I'll see if he has some. in the meantime I have a curious issue. the rear hub looks like the one in the top right hand corner of this pic http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2959912030102942578QjbtAfthere is a tag on the pinion gear drive shaft but it is hard to read the diaphram for the high low is about 45 degrees to the drive shaft, there is no tag in the glovebox. I hope 3B is out there? Is it a duelpreformance? Whare on the axle would the # be?

They can search by dimension. I'm sure you know this but pay attention to which is the air side & which is the oil side when re-installing. Seen a few guys forget that the oil side faces outboard on a floating axle inner hub seal. Nice pics!
