I was planning on putting a lot of the old '54 235 stuff on my new '61 261. I didn't get a lot of the slap-on items with my 261. But there are no holes in the 261 block for the 235's generator bracket. So, it means an alternator and a change-over to 12 volts is in my future, right?

Sounds like as good an excuse as any for an upgrade. Go for it.

Seems odd. In '61 everything was still generator. Maybe the 261 has a different bracket setup, but I'd bet there's a way to mounts a generator.

Generators work but I would suggest going with the alternator since you might have to fabricate some stuff anyway cool

My generator mounts on my '62 are up the side of the block a little ways, where there are two bosses cast and drilled. They are not down low on the flange like 216 blocks were. Did you look up there? It had to be somewhere. I used the original generator brackets to mount my alternator, and that's a good way to do it. It came out perfectly lined up. I'd take a picture but I would have to take out the oil filter and alternator for you to see it.
If you pull up the 261 article and look at one of the pictures on the bottom you can barely see one. It's the two bosses along the thin webbing on the front of the drivers side block. Are there pipe plugs in there or something?

4ontheFloor, There are several threaded holes up on the block but none are spaced right for my old bracket. There's a 261 and a newer 235 at the junkyard that I'll visit tomorrow. Thanks!!

Wally, are you still in the Seattle area (where's waldo grin )? I have a couple generator brackets in the leftovers bin, I can dig them out and measure the holes if you like. One is off my 248GMC, the other is of unknown origin (it's GM, but don't know which flavor). If you like I will dig them out and measure the mounting holes.

I ended up having to elongate a hole, I think, because all I had were 216 brackets.

Is it true you can get threaded rod and a half dozen nuts to fab your new alternator on your old genny bracket? Anyone have pictures?

I just used long bolts, but that is true. I don't have any pictures because I can't get a good angle on it.

Here's a drawing of what I found out on my tour of the yard yesterday. I don't have a digital camera but I can make line drawings.

Bolt holes 1 and 3 are for the 261 generator bracket which is about 1" longer than 216/older 235 bracket. I can elongonate a hole on my old bracket and make it work like 4ontheFloor said.

When the 261 is in a larger 2T truck, holes 1,2 and 4 are used for a side motor mount which bolts over the generator bracket. The three holes at the "7" must be for some kind of center motor mount (COE?). Holes 5 and 6 are for the oil lines. Thanks, everyone!!!
