My '53 pops out of third gear when pullling and sometimes gets stuck shifting down into first or into reverse. I've had the transmission out when I replaced the ring and pinion (Patricks) and could find no significantly worn parts. Is it a linkage problem?

I DON'T THINK I CAN HELP YOU WITH THE POPPING OUT OF GEAR, BUT TO FIX THE GETTING STUCK. WHEN DOWN SHIFTING YOU ALMOST NEED TO GO FORM 3-2-1, DON'T JUST GO 3-1. I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 53 AND I RARELY HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN I GO 3-2-1.
I HOPE THIS HELPS.

Most likely yes on the basis that it is hanging up in 1st.

Popping out of 3rd is not uncommon when the linkage is worn or the shift box is worn, or the spacer/synchro on 3rd is worn.

My best guess is the shift box and linkage combined. Let us know what you find.

OldCarKook: You are right, had to replace spacer/ synchro a couple times on 61 3spd. Nothing uncommon about that problem. popcorn The Truth is Out There ( Good Luck)

Sometimes my 3 speed will "hang" or get stuck in between 2nd and 3rd gear, and then I have to get out and pull the linkage up and then I'm good to go. If I pull the gear shifter back to me real quick in between shifts the truck will shift so smooth it feels like an automatic. Maybe it is worn in but almost worn out eek

If after everything is checked out and it still pops out of gear, you will need to align the transmission. It is described in detail in the shop manual. I also recommend using a spacer washer behind the front bearing. That moves the main drive gear back to allow for more tooth engagement with the synchro drum.

A worn thrust washer behind the second gear also causes problems .

Thats why I always remove the 3 speed & install a 4 speed direct drive trans. on any truck I mess with. You can fight that 3 speed trans & the related linkage for the rest of your life. If you are a masochist stick with the 3 speed. If not upgrade to the 4 speed.
