I'm assembling an old 283 for a friend, I'm at the point of installing the rear main seal and wondered if there is a trick to putting it in without damaging the seal. The package with the seal included a 'shoehorn' to use during installation, but I'm not sure how to use it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Mike | | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 | The shoehorn goes behind the seal so as not to peel the back, inner, edge of the seal off against the sharp block.I have made them with a piece of banding strap crimped into a short piece of cooper or steel tube. Stager the ends at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock so as not to get a leak. Make sure your #5 bearing clearance is no more then .002, because even a new seal can't control a lot of oil slash.
