If you don't have the nifty J-2232 driver which the shop manual shows, how do you remove the rear axle oil seals on a '48 3/4T? It seems you have to hit on the bearing to drive out the seal. I'd like to avoid that since I'd have to use a punch and hit the bearing in just one spot at a time.

Use a brass drift-punch.I have never hurt one bearing yet grin
The tough bearing to remove is the outer one which is held in with a snap-ring.
-If you are replacing the seals, pry the old seal out and the bearing will be easily removed

I always use a pry-bar. Just be careful not to dent anything. Also, check your breather-vent on top of the axle. Be sure it's clear or you'll build up pressure when the oil warms up and blow out the seals again.

I brought the hubs and new seals to my old timer mechanic. He replaced them at no charge. (He tapped them out like Luke suggested.) Thanks.

Thanks, Fred T, for reminding me and everyone else about the axle vent!

We were able to get an NOS axle breather through Obsolete Chevy When we went to put it on our '42 Pickup, it was discovered that the hole was never threaded for a breather, so we had to tap it.

When tapping or drilling a hole where a person does not want to get metal shavings in, usse some grease on the tap or drill-bit.
