what is the tubing that runs from the oil filter housing up over the valve cover for? there is a smaller cannister on the passenger side before the piping runs back to the block. it it some kind of oil seperator?

There are no oil outlets/intakes on the passenger side of these engines,other than a factory drilled 1/4"npt plug in the middle of the cyl. head,just below the rocker cover,that is dead inline with the rocker arm oil feed.
Sometimes when the engine sludged up a bit a "mechanic" would tee in a copper line off the oil filter or oil sender port and run a line upover or up around the engine to the Pass side, to add to/augment the oil feed to te sludge starved rockers/valve train assm....
Not sayin its right,BUT
Quick fix and a cheap alternative to some cash poor souls who could,nt afford an almost sure rebuild.

looked closer and i was wrong....the tubing is not attached to the oil filter but rather the intake manifold. must be connected there for a vacuum source as a crankcase ventilation system. attached are photos:

early home built PCV system?

Could be, but GMC did use a PCV unit in the late 40's. I know there was a GMC truck at the Kansas City show last year w/that set up on it. And I want to say it was one of our Stovebolt members truck from KC...Joe

doesn't really look homemade. why would someone go through the effort for pcv?

this is on a chevy c60. maybe the engine came from a gmc at some point?

1954 261 factory PCV system

What year engine is the 261? I'll check the 1960 Shop Manual and post a photo, if there is one [the PCV set-up is the same in 1960].

It looks like it is missing the valve cover to air cleaner hose (which would have been used with a non-breathing oil-filler cap).

this is a 1960 c60. the truck is low mileage and i believe the engine to be original but anything is possible.

the oil bath housing doesn't have any more hose connections and the oil cap is a breather type.

That's the factory PCV system, and it is pretty rare and nice to have. They were stock on COE's and available as options on all engines.

The stock PCV on my GMC 302 looks similar but the valve body mounts to the intake manifold and the breather tube has a little paper element air filter in the body and a filler cap for the oil- the valve cover does not have a filler cap.
