More importantly, what "new" tools are available for all those special GM tools the manual says you need, like for pulling the clutch gear and main shaft? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Matt

I used a aftermarket repair manual for a 50s car to repair mine ,it was the same procedure. If I can remember correctly the hardest to get out was a bearing retainer that I think I used a couple of screwdrivers to get it out. It has been about three years since I had mine apart and its not hard and it would be nice to have the correct tools but its not necessary | | |

I rebuilt my 46 3spd twice (long story) it's not that hard just make sure you follow the manual for the proper order things go together. The only odd tools I had to come up with was a way to remove the rear bearing retainer and a way to punch out the plug (looks like a freeze plug) that covers one of the shafts. to remove the bearing retainer I used the tang end of a large file, just push it in the slot as shown in the manual it spreads the retainer and the bearing almost falls out. I removed the plug with a long piece of 5/16 steel rod used as a punch you'll have to bend it a bit to work. The rest is easy. Make sure you catch all the roller bearings that come out when you disassemble you don't want to leave any of those in the bottom of the case when you put it back together.
