G'day all,
I am looking to install a V8 in my 53 3/4. I'm going to run it on ULP & LPG so size and economy isn't a issue. However i have a issue which i hope you can help me. Australian Dept of transport (Queensland) have a regulation which roughly states "whatever motor you install in your vehicle, you need to have the same braking and emissions controls". This means if i uses a V8 from a new car i need a disc brake front and rear all their pollution crap.
So I'm looking for a V8 which fits in my 3/4 which came from a vehicle which had drum brakes front and rear and limited pollution control. I will be installing a brake booster at aid my current brakes.
So if you can give me some ideas, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Brendon

That's an interesting problem. I'm in California and they are a little bit ahead of their time for emission control, smog. 3/4 ton trucks were not required to have any smog equipment till after 74-76, I don't know if that gives you an out or not. IIRC 64 was the first year for smog equipment for Chev an air pump, not counting the PCV valve. This varied by maker, Chrysler went lean burn so they had minimal equipment, I've never paid attention to f*rd. Disk brakes didn't appear on trucks till 71, and I don't know about passenger cars. That will do for starters.

I believe the 327 came with vehicles using drum brakes and just a erg valve for emissions. I may be wrong, I was a F%&# man back then.

Did you know what vehicle the 327 was in? I think we had had HK manaros with them. I just need a model with a v8 with drum brakes. It doesn't matter as long as its chev. Believe it or not, its all to do with the engine number. each one is matched to a vehicle.

the 327 was at least optional in any Chev truck, 1962-1967, none of which had disc brakes or any significant smog equipt - 283 was 57-62, even better

Thanks Guys, I'll ring the dept of transport here and have a chat with them. Knowing that 327 came out in later years of my truck will help my cause.
