How do you get the front bearing out of 4 speed trans out of my 70 chevy 3/4 4x4 ? Is there a special tool? In the books they refer to some tool but I haven't been able to find one. I've made other tools and would make one for this if I had a good idea. Jim

You cannot pull the maindrive gear out without tearing down the whole trans. But you can pull the bearing. Remove the snap ring from the shaft. If you have a bearing press plate pull the brg.- shaft out far enough to get it clamped around behind the retainer ring. Use agear puller to pull it off. Or you can pull it out aways & put something square behind the ring & hammer on the end of the shaft with a brass drift. Keep increasing the spacers untill it comes off. Watch the ring on the new bearing sometimes they are different from the original.

A bearing press plate, thast's it. Where would you buy a bearing press plate? I've got to rebuild the transmission it sounds like a coffee grinder at the moment and I have another that needs a new main shaft. Thanks for the info! Jim

The best place is a discount tool store. We have Cummins tool in this area. Harbor freight has stores in some areas. Get a good book. These are ornory the first time you do one. There is a spacer that goes on the cluster gear that they started using on the latter models. You should put this on. Sometimes the snap ring breaks & lets agear slide out of place & makes a lot of noise. This spacer prevents this. Or you can weld the gear to the shaft.
