Has anyone here had any experience with this axle? It has 3.54 ratios and is almost the same width as the stock '50 axle(1 1/4" narrower). Also has discs . Thanks all.

As I understand it, it is the regular GM 10-bolt, same as used in most of the RWD offerings for the past 20+ years (including the Z-28). There were a few exceptions that had a heavier 10-bolt (Buick turbo Grand Nationals, and a couple of others), but they should be fine under an AD unless you are a drag racer. My '97 Sonoma with the 2.2L four and OD automatic has a 4:11 ratio, if you need deeper gears. I'd guess that 3:73s could be found too.

I've got an article from Car Craft around here somewhere that explains the variations - let me know if you want it and I'll try to dig it up.

The width sounds pretty close - I've heard that a 70 1/2 - '81 Camaro rear end is ideal, but I can't vouch for it myself.

Don't know the measurement. But according to a friend of mine the 2wd is narrower than the 4 wd. He had reason to know because he was using a 2 wd on his project.

I'm pretty sure I read that Car Craft article too-think it was about a GM Skunkworks souped up 55 Chevy 210 2 dr. Anyway I believe that they indicated the 4WD S-Truck rear axle is 3" wider flange to flange than its 2WD counterpart. Would be interesting to know for sure some dimensions... anybody post stock rear diff width and spring perch measurements for AD's? I might not have a truck yet, but nothin says I can't start scrounging parts for it!
