Just bought a fresh air heater from a fellow bolter for my 49 sub. Looked in the shop manual but can't find anything on the fresh air heater. Also did a search. I need to know if there is a water control valve in this system and if so where to put it. Also It has a 6 volt motor and I have converted to a 12 volt system. I see that most of the vendors sell 12V replacement motors and I am wondering if they will swap as direct replacements. A couple of questions. Are these motors one speed or does the switch give you more than one speed? Is there a schematic that shows the water valve hookup and the electrical connections. I also need to get the core checked out. Any help out there? Weeds

There was just a monumental discussion about these heaters. If you do a search for heater within the past month you'll find answers with pictures and links to just about all your questions.

HERE I know it doesn't start out sounding like what you want but read through... there are a lot of tangents in the discussion.

I just finished a 12 volt conversion on my heater. The motors are not really a direct replacements. I wasn't happy with the one I got from Jim Carter so I returned it. The diameter of the motor was too small and the gasket wouldn't seal it where the back of the motor goes through the firewall.

There is a control valve that mounts on the firewall with a control rod going to the bottom of the dash.

The blower motor switch controls the speed of the blower motor.

I had a local radiator shop backflush and check out my heater core before I reassembled the heater.

If you go to this link it shows how the heater is installed.

If you're interested in replacing the blower motor with a 12 volt motor start a new post in the electrical bay or pm me and I will go through the details of what motor I used and what I had to do to install it.

Also, if your 6v heater motor is good, you might want to post it for sale in the Swap Meet.

So, where did you get the one that fit?

Grainger. Part number 1LWK8. The motor diameter is the same as the original 6 volt motor and it is about 3/8 inch shorter than the original.
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/ww...ing=1lwk8&submit.x=12&submit.y=9
The replacement motor has a 1/4 inch shaft and the original motor has a 5/15 inch shaft so I had to get a shim for the motor shaft.
I got the shim from American Classic Truck Parts. Part number EL116-SHIM.
The mounting studs on the new motor are just slightly more narrow than on the original motor (less than 1/8 inch) so the mounting holes will have to be elongated using a small round file.

While we're on the subject, who sells the rubber seal that seals the gap between the motor and the firewall... the one that looks like a big O

AND the one between the motor and the housing?

And where is the Grainger outlet that will sell to the public??? Our local one in the Chicago western suburbs will only sell to comercial accounts. I've tried a dozen times over the past decade.
Is that pn. for a 6v or 12v and do they stock motors for both voltages?

Denny,
The 1LWK8 is the part number for a 12 volt motor.
Grainger part# 2M196 is a 6 volt motor. It is the same size as the 12 volt motor. They only have a limited supply of the 6 volt motor and I suspect that when they are gone they will be discontinued. You can get the heater gasket set from American Classic Truck Parts and a few other vendors with links on this site.

Grainger will sell to only other businesses. It should not be too hard to find someone with a business license who can order one for you.

Denny, in most places all you need is a State Tax license to buy from wholesalers. Yea, you may have to fill out a sales and use form every quarter but it's a small inconvenience compared to the savings.

Check with your states licensing bureau and dept. of revenue... on line. I'm sure. I have a business that has absolutely no relationship to 70% ofthe companies I buy from, all they want is that tax number.

If you are unable to buy from Grainger you can get the motor and the 1/4 to 5/16 shaft bushing from Drillspot.com.
The motor is a Dayton CMC 502A and the bushing is a Dayton 6L100/150/4 They sell to the general public.

Another alternative for a donor heater motor, is most 57-67 ford trucks. There 2 speed and have the small shaft that will fit most 40-50's chevy heater fans. The 57-59 motor has a short housing that is very similiar to the 47-53 6 volt motor in dimensions.
Only modification that will need to be made to your heater is drilling out the bodymount holes a 1/16th inch bigger to accept the ford motor bolts. Also in some instances, not all, you may have to flip the fan over or twist the blades in the opposite direction so the fan blows correctly, not a big deal and works fine!
Have done this to many Chevy standered and delux heaters and all have worked out very well!
I have a 50 delux heater in my 41 that I did this to and it will run you out of the truck on low! 12 Volts are wonderful!
Just my 2 cents
