Does any know if the whole canister was black or was the bottom orange and only the top black? In the process of finding one to restore and place in my 47 half ton. Appreciate it.

There are a few different ones, and the colors can be different.
I have a NOS Fram filter in the box, I'll dig it out and post a picture for you so you can see the color combination.

Here is the first picture of several I just took of a genuine Fram canister type bypass filter. Click on the picture then next and next.. for the rest of them.

One picture shows the box with model number F-418W.
It still has the original decals on it, and shows them although the top one is mostly missing.

I believe that the Fram canisters can be identified by the "pleated" bottom, as other brands have a smooth bottom.

I have another one installed on my truck, it looks twice as tall, not sure the brand or original color though.

Is there a drain plug on the bottom of your canister Grigg?

The one in my truck, of unknown brand, does also.

FYI: I have a couple that look just like Grigg's, so that is probably the standard color scheme.

Mazzer,
if you're looking to restore yours, you can find the paint at your local auto parts store. It is called "Chevy Orange" and the decals can be purchased through most of the usual truck vendors.

I appreciate all the help..one more question..can you tell me where the inlet and outlet lines connect in on a 216 block. I see an allen screw in what looks a port for one of the lines. It is behind and a little to the left (toward front) of the exhaust pipe. There are two other ports hooked together by a small short metal line to the right of center and near the oil gauge line. Which is which?? Mazzer

The Fram filters were orange & black like the other bolters stated. It has a cover bolt that takes a 7/8 wrench although some use a big wing nut. The AC filter is yellow with black top. It takes a 5/8 wrench on the top bolt. The outlet behind the exhaust pipe with the tube going to the oil gauge is the pressure line. You may have to get a pipe T to hook up to it. It goes to the inlet on the side of the filter. It drains out from the bottom outlet & goes to the opening in front of the ex. pipe down near the bottom of the block.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Here is a picture of my Fram filter. It did not come on the truck but I bought it new in kit form from Local auto parts dealer in late 70s. Hope it helps. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1399979699047579877vbvRcr?vhost=rides

Go to "STOVE BOLT TECH TIPS" and review the "Great Oil Filter Debate." It is a good article on GM oil filters, with pictures.

I've referred to this many times with my friends. As useful today as back then, maybe even more so.
