1) mounting straps, anybody have any they want to part with or do I need to make a set. American Classics says discontinued and no refernece with JC.
2) Gas tank mounting pads - are these rubber now? I have one out of truck on tear down and looks tar-paper-ish.
3) Original wiring for fuel gauge came from under cab, through hole in floor pan (through grommet)to sending unit? Considering running it in cab.
4) Two tapped bung holes in bottom of tank - one is fuel out, the other a drain plug?
5) Fuel out bung supposed to have a shut of valve (ref JC's catlogue) but can not find one. I was thinking of a 90 and the short lower flex hose between it and steel tubing to fpump.
6) Sending unit for 12 volt gauge, 90 ohm or 30?
7) Fuel line hard plumbed to fuel pump from frame mount?
8) Finally fuel cap vented? Seeing no vent pipe. Thanks for any answers. Cavebull

There are holes in the floor pan for the mounting straps. Bolt down one end, put in the tank and run the tape over the tank down to the other hole. Kind of hard to get the second bolt through the tape and into the hole, but that the way I did it. 2)I used some rubber pad I had. If you want the tar paper stuff, just use some 30 lb roofing. This can be used for your anti-sqeek gaskets for the fenders nad running boards. 3)You can run the wire through the cab but remember you have to be able to take out the floor to get to the battery etc. How will you hide the wire along the edge of the door? 4)Yes 5)That should work. I don't have a shut-off on mine. 6)I don't remember (getting old I guess) I think 30 ohm. 7)Yes, Mine is. 8) The stock fuel cap is vented. If you get a repro. be sure to get one for a 41-46. Hope this helps. A previous owner must have lost the mounting straps for my tank. I just thought it was sandwiched in place by the seat supports. Thanks for the heads up! | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | 1) Mine is held down with the seat supports. I have pieces of inner tube between the two metal surfaces. One of the POs removed them.
2) Again, I've got rubber inner tube pieces under the tank.
3) [shrug] The way you describe it is how it is in my truck. Can't say that it's a bad design. Keeps the wires out of the way.
4) I'm not sure what the second one is for. It's the same thread as the petcock hole, so I assume it's for either draining or another petcock.
5) Yes, that would make it work, but you'll be sorry when you had to put a new hose on there with a full tank of gas. take the plug for the other side to the flaps and ask for a gas tank petcock of the same size. They're not that much money, and you can then shut off your fuel for when you don't drive it -- in case the hose cracks and you start leaking.
6) Depends on the gauge. What does the gauge say?
7) Yes, mine is. It's got steel brake line, which connects to a short rubber fuel line that hooks to the petcock.
8) Yes, the cap is vented. You can get them at any flaps for about $5-10.

The question is about "underseat gas tank". Is the tank really UNDER the seat? I thought 1937 was the only year that the tank was UNDER the seat. Mmm, maybe I just missed the question entirely. Its about the straps...right! | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | Achipmunk all the 41-47 1sts are under the seats except for the COE models, in which mine is behind the seat. | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | 39 and 40 models used the same tank and location as the 41-46 models. In 47 chevy and GMC took em out of the cab and put em under the bed. In 1949 they went back in the cab behind the seat and stayed there untill 1972. In 1973 they put em between under the bed outside the frame... those were the ones that were in the news for exploding on side impact.
Kind of scarry if you think about it... most stovebolters are sitting on a bomb. Going to see if I can put it inline before amp gauge and use both.
