I dealt with soda blasting and it's really a mess and it doesn't remove the deep pitted rust.
Other media is too expensive. At about $30.00+ for a five gallon bucket, it's hard to imagine blasting that stuff out in the open. Media is great if you have a blasting cabinet where it can be collected and reused.
Sand is the only way to go with a cab and other large items.

You might get away with sand on the cab, frame, etc. but I prefer to be safe with something next to impossible to replace. I will be hard enough to bolt the fenders back on when at the original shape. Just my 2 cents...

A good guy will not hurt the steel if he keep the pressure low. And working on several pieces at one time, this keep the heat down and you have no warping. Soda is a HUGE mess you will have a very hard time getting it all out of the metal and seams. Plus if any moisture gets to it , have fun. Been there and done that never again. Plastic beads are one route but much slower. So price goes up. These old trucks have some stout steel in them and will take much more abuse than the new coke can stuff they use. Make sure you are ready to prime when you get the parts home. probably means a finer grade of sand or material being used. finer means less sanding so body shop cost goes down.
what ever you have it blasted w/ is your choice and what is available for your pocket book. do it once and be done w/ it. i say ! ! ! Go to a reputible shop. ASK the painter what he wants B-4 you do anything. honestly i forgot what it cost to have carolines whole truck done it was not cheap, but the shop blasted and primered everything everywhere b4 i picked it all up. the paint shop knows the primer is compatable w/ what he paints with. so no problems w/ like vs unlike products. i didn't have to, nor do i have, the tools needed to spray primers. so what is it worth for you to do what you can vs. having it ALL done and ready for the paint shop.
