Well Take a look at the pictures on my info there and you will see why I wanted to strip it down. The white paint looks like some one painted it with a Kirby vaccum paint kit. It is extremely bad in fact i think you could do a better job with a MOP!!! It is wavey and has way too many dents in it HA HA .. I plan on painting it a demin silver with flat black hot rod flames on the hood.

I drove the truck ofr almost a year as is, and really want to finish the truck my way. In the end why do we bother doing anything to them at all?? WE LOVE IT!!! I will have a very nice truck to drive dailey. I am currently driving my 1988 K5 blazer that I re- did a few years ago. Real basic ride metal cowl hood 300 GM crate, 35 inch tires 6 inch lift. two tone gray/ siler paint and a smoother back top. Nice running rig. It is my sons in 2 more years. I will turn the key over to him ....ouch oh well he will start driving with a nice custom blazer.

The 3:73 rear with an OD trans.should be a perfect match, for performance and economy. You could go all the way to 4:11 gears with good results too,but I am thinkin the 3:73 will be just fine.

I am working on getting the pictures to Peggy to add to the profile. Update on the truck. I had to remove the wood from the bed. Well the square nuts ( farmer nuts) where a huge pain sooo. A large hammer to break the already rotten wood, and a saw saz to cut all the bolts out. Took about 2 hours and made a HUGE mess but the wood, and old rails are out. Truck is on the trailer now and I have to drop it off in a few minutes to the blaster.

Will be priming the hood, and fenders, doors and a few other parts this evening. I did settle on colors for the truck!! That was a biggie. We are going to paint it in flat metallic colors. The body and engine bay are going to be gun smoke grey metallic, and the dash, door panels, rims, roof, and hot rod flames on the hood are going to be vintage burgundy pearl. SHould be a great contrast. If any one is looking for great prices on flat paints ( they are sold as a kit) in single stage check out kustom shop .com Great prices. I have a account at the local paint and body shop and the money on 3 gallons of paint and reducer, and catalist are less than what I would have in paint only. I will shoot some pictures on the raw sheet metal tonight before priming. Take care gotta drop the truck off!!!

I hope this works. Here are some photos that I up loaded. I have many more but lets see if others can veiw this first. Well on the front fenders we found some old steel patches that are brazed in. I will be ordering new lower fender repair patches. I am amazed at how many different styles of mirros have been on this truck. I have 19 holes in one door and 18 in the other!!!. The doors both have been hit in the same place. The dents are at the front, top of the door panel.???? Nothing that my new maga spot gun cant handle. Looking forward to testing it out this evening. There are plenty of dents to work on LOL. better than rust.

I am using upol self etching filler primer. The cool thing about this product is that if you reduce it to a certain level it is a easy sanding filler primer. Now reduce it down more it becomes a sealer that needs not top coat. So areas like the insides of fenders, cab floor, etc you can spray it once and forget about it. Works great and saves money in the process. One thing I did find is that you need a large gun to shoot it though. I am priming with a 1.8 gun and it is spraying find and lays down great, even if you are only shooting a light cover coat to stop any rust. Like the outer door skins I shot it extremely light as we will be working with it soon. It levels out great no pebbles, or rocks.

Well last night we spent 3 hours working with the new stud gun to pull out some door dents. We thought we would get further than we did. These old trucks have some extremely strong steel. They are a tough to pull. We had to pull some of the dents and then heat them and shrink the steel back down to stop any "coke can effect" Getting there. Hope to have all the dents pulled and filled by end of week.

Well spent 3 hours last night filling the small dents and sanding the lower door skins. I am welding the holes in the upper part of the door tonight, along with all the mirror holes in the window frame as well. 47 years old and the amount of small dents and dings is showing!!! We ended up skiming the entire lower panel and the sanding it down. Too many dings all over the door. We had hammered out what we could pulled the rest and there are still more to be found. I am sure all of this work will be worth it once it is done.

I have been adding pictures as I go along, last night I forget my camera card at my shop so no new pictures are posted. Will get some new ones up in a day.

hdwrench - I presume that you did not use the original rear end to get your 3:73 ratio. If you did use the original rear end, I would like to duplicate that set up in my truck, which is also using a 383. Thanks in advance.

For the 3:73 rear, did you use the original '62 housing, or did you install a different axle assembly to get that ratio. I would like to know since I want to do the same for my 383 '62. Thanks.

My truck came with the 3.73 rear gear. It still is stock. Open unit. I do have to take a look inside though as the rear has been making some funny noises. I think I broke a tooth off of a spider gear. Even with the open rear end the engine makes so much power it will roast both tires until I decide to let off the gas. I won a burn out contest last year, most smoke and longerst marks. Almost two blocks HA HA

Back to the progress. Both the doors have all 37 holes welded shut. The door had some many minor dings and dents that we have to skin the entire door and the block it down. We have less that a 1/16 on the door. No other way to get the straight. I thought about after market doors but after looking at one , they are more work than the stock unit. Plus they are not a exact copie of the stock unit. I have to keep telling myself it is not a show truck but a DRIVER. HA HA HA.

The front fenders have been repaired. Whoever did it long ago did a great job. New lower patch panels will replace the old fix. There is still no rust to be found. Plenty of bent and dented items. I would rather work with that than big rust holes.

Here is the link to the new pictures.

Well the rest of the truck is back from the blaster. We found 0 rust !!!!!!!!!!!!! More dents and dings but the truck has turned out to be 100% rust free. The front fenders where fixed and we are going to add the lower patch panels to clean the lower fender up and reduce the alount of filler needed. I am working on filling all of the trim holes, stake holes and gas filler neck hole. Plenty of welding to do but the truck is moving along great. I am going to give the frame a new coat of black as the blaster did the frame as well. The guy did not ask to do it and the cost was much more than we had agreed upon. THat was a bummer as the cost doubled from 600 to 1120 ( almost doubled) so that took money from other areas. Oh well the frame will look better with a fresh coat of black paint. I am going to prime it as well with the self etching primer first then a coat of chassis black. Rustolem is looking good due to cost HA HA

Money....time...and a truck with no rust?
Its either clean living or you sold your soul to the devil.

That's quite a list of upgrades and a great looking project.
Best of luck with it!

That rust bucket. No selling my soul, as to the other well made some changes in my life a 1 year and 5 monts so maybe it is paying off.

Anyways I used a paint called xo rust on the frame. It was 9.95 a qt and I thinned it with xyol 4-1. That thinning ratio was a crap shoot but for the frame i was not going to be overly picky. It turned out great the new pictures are loaded. Box sides are done. On to the cab for the time being until my roll pan comes in and we can get that welded in.

The cab pictures will be up soon forget the card in the camera at home. SO will get them up soon.

Well the box sides are done. The cab is next, we are wroking on the door lines. We have had to slice the cab and move some of the metal around to ensure the door gaps are even all the way around. Great to hang the doors and see it start to come together.

Update

I have the cab primed and I have painted the roof and firewall. I am planning on painting the inside of the cab this week. The new paint I am working with is a learning curve. But all is going along well. I will have the new bed wood here end of the week. The new fuel tank should be right behind it. Ahead of the planned finsih date at this point.!!! Will have some mroe updated pictures soon. The colors are very nice and look great together.

WEll new No limit aluminum fuel tank is in. The body is almost complete. I have the roof painted and the inside is done alone with the inside of doors as well. Moving along nicley. I am mocking up the bed wood now and with the box being not as square as it could be.
